Jo Hutcheson found the following website and asked me to forward to the list.
Many of you will remember Jo H, as she frequently sent great 'finds' to
several lists when she was subcribed. Her workload leaving her not enough
time for the lists now, she wanted me to share the following with you. Enjoy.

You can access the latest version of Paul Heinegg's "Free African
Americans of North Carolina and Virginia" (now also including South
Carolina, Maryland, and Delaware) on
http://www.freeafricanamericans.com
The book is a major genealogical study, quite controversial, stunning
in scope, a genealogical best-seller and hugely expensive to buy. It
contains the history of over 330 families on over 1000 pages of text.
Amazingly, the author has put the whole thing on the web. Heinegg's
conclusions (see his Introduction) are at odds with those of Theresa
Hicks and Wes Taukchiray ("South Carolina Indians, Indian Traders,
and Other Ethnic Connections", 1998) whose evidence supports Indian
identity for many of these families.
