Subject: Book - The Frontier in the Colonial South From: Gary Wilbanks Date: March 13, 2000 Message text written by INTERNET:[email protected] >Hello, Has anyone read the book (and can recommend): "The Frontier in the Colonial South: South Carolina Backcountry, 1736-1800" by George Lloyd Johnson, Jr. From the description it sounds like a great book, but I am wondering if the tax rolls and church records are included. < ***************************** I have a copy of it. It is well done. Filled with lots of excellent graphs & charts with all kinds of data on number of acres owned, distribution of slave ownership, value of slaves, number of boats owned, the Regulator Movement, Religious diversity, the local economy, etc.. There is quite a bit of coverage on the history of the Baptists in the area. Church records are not included in the sense of membership rolls and minutes. There is a narrative type of history of various churches and church leaders in one of the chapters. There are a few abstracts of minutes here and there quoted within the narrative of the chapter. I don't see any tax rolls but there are excerpts from lists of debts incurred by some of the early inhabitants.
