While the following is not my direct line, I am descended from 3 other sons of
James Bonner & Mary Laird. This is undocumented information from a cousin's
notes:
James Bonner, Jr. (1792-1844) , son of James Bonner & Mary Laird, was born in
1792 in Abbeville Dist., SC. In 1819, he married Mary Porter Foster
(1797-1857). She was the daughter of James Couples Foster and Jane Morrow who
were married in 1780 in Abbeville Dist by Rev. John T. Pressly. James Couples
Foster, called "Old Master Foster," came from Rockbridge Co., VA and was the
first of the Fosters to come to Abbeville Dist. He fought in the Battle of
Cowpens during the Revolutionary War and moved to Ohio in 1833. The parents of
Jane Morrow were Samuel Morrow and Elizabeth Carmichael.
James Bonner, Jr. and Mary Porter Foster moved from Abbeville Dist., SC to
Monroe Co., AL about 1821 and farmed. In 1827, they moved to Wilcox Co., AL
and in 1837 sold their property for $20,000 and moved to Springfield, IN where
both are buried. It is said his scrupples against slavery made him sell his
slaves to his brother on condition that families would not be broken up and
this condition was kept fully.
