Subject: BLACKMON, John E. From: R. W. Hughes Date: July 18, 1998 Civil War Veteran - Sergeant, Company E, 12th SC Infantry, Capt. Charley F. Hinson's Company, Col. Dunovant's Regiment of S.C. Voluntexers. John E. Blackmon, aged 25, volunteered at Lancaster County Court House on 07 Aug 1861, and was inducted into service on 30 Aug 1861 at Lightwood Knot Springs, near Columbia. He was furloughed home on 23 Nov 1861. On 18 Apr 1862, he was reported as "sick, on furlough in Lancaster District". In October 1862, he was listed as being in the Winchester Hospital, VA, then was furloughed again with lumbago and sciatica. On 16 May 1863, it was reported that he had been sick in a hospital since 11 May 1863. At the close of June 1863, he was dismissed from the hospital and given a 40 day furlough due to dysentery. He was wounded, and subsequently captured on 12 May 1864 during the Battle of Spotsylvania, VA. He died on 03 Aug 1864 in the Federal Prison Camp at Pea Island, near Ft. Delaware, MD.
