Hello,

Afrigeneas and Rootsweb's POCS (people of color south) are two lists
that are excellent for researching and sharing information. At the
Afrigeneas website, you will also find the address for their Slave Data
mailing list. Unfortunately, my disk with the addresses of the mailing
lists I'm on is acting up right now. Hope it hasn't become corrupted!

A good general SC website is . It has links to
many websites (state and county history, counties, genealogy, SC
Historical Society, SC Department of Archives and History, etc.) needed
to become informed about doing research in SC.

It is also a good idea to join -- and, whenever you can, contribute to
-- mailing lists in the locales you are researching, whether those lists
are Euro-American or African American. ( It takes two hands to clap!)
Many on those lists have been extremely helpful to me, and I've learned
a good deal of general information and gotten how-to's from them.

As the vast majority of African Americans were formerly "owned" by
Euro-Americans -- and, in some cases, Native Americans -- you will
eventually need to know more about those groups if you're researching
back to the pre-1865 period. Additionally, as the names of former
slaves were not listed in the US census until 1870, sources of slave
names will include the wills and farm/plantation records of the
Euro-Americans who "owned" the slaves. So you'll need to know who the
possible slaver holders were and how to aquire those and other documents
about them.

You might want to list the surnames (in full caps) you're researching.
I often get information from people who happen to recognize one of the
surnames in the list at the end of my e-mails. Finally, you may want to
read "Finding a Place Called Home" by Dr. Dee Parmer Woodtor. It's an
excellent resource for those of us researching our African American
ancestry.

(Disclaimer: I have no proprietary or monetary interest in any of the
sites or books listed above.)

Good luck on your quest.

Judith
