In 1820 Cumberland census has 2 families - John and William BETHEA, born
prev1785 and 1785-1794 respectively. They were presumably descendants
of
William BETHEA (b1745) and his father Tristram who lived at Cape Fear.

They were cousins of the BETHEAs of Marion Co SC, of which several
members
were close to a James CALCOTE, who died there in 1820. He left two
minor
daughters, Jane and Sarah, who were supported and educated by his estate
until about 1824 but then disappear. In 1828 Jane married Curtis Durham
GRADY in Cumberland Co NC. Sarah married a GULLY in 1827 - both Grady
and
Gully were grandchildren on Ezekiel SLOCUMB and together they organised
the
shareout of the remainder of their late father-in-law's estate.

It has been variously rumoured that the two girls, prior to their
marriages, were living in the Slocumb or Gully households. But it does
seem possible that they stayed with the Betheas.

A further coincidence? - the wife of William Bethea (b1745) was Jerusha
BROWN. Jane's full name was Jane Brown Calcote/Calcoat.

Can anyone throw any light at all on this obscure matter?
