The maximum message size allowed in SCRoots-L is currently set at 20k.
Sometimes I have set it higher, but not usually. If I set it too high, then
eventually someone will quote an entire digest message back to the Forum. If
everyone was a careful quoter, then I could set the max message size higher.

File attachments are automatically rejected in SCRoots-L. But, we have an
SCRoots File archive setup at onelist. You can post files there for others to
download. See the SCRoots web site for a link to the file archive. You can
also send file attachments in our [email protected] email service. See
below for more information and instructions.

If you have something that you want to offer for posting on the SCRoots web
site, you can send it directly to me. It may take some time for me to get
around to putting things on the web. My time is limited and I do what I can
when I can.

SCRoots Email Services

1. [email protected]
This is our "Flagship" email service hosted by the Rootsweb Genealogical
Cooperative. This service is restricted to text only discussion and sharing of
information regarding South Carolina genealogy. You must be a subscriber to
participate. Instructions are provided when you subscribe. To subscribe send
the word "subscribe" (without the quotes) as the only text in the body of a
message to
[email protected] for mail mode or to
[email protected] for digest mode.

Subscribe to SCRoots-L:
mailto:[email protected]?body=subscribe
Subscribe to SCRoots-D:
mailto:[email protected]?body=subscribe

Rootsweb is where SCRoots began and we expect to stay here. But, we are limited
in the number and type of mailing lists that we can operate at Rootsweb. For
this reason, and to avoid depending completely on Rootsweb (even the best go
down at times), SCRoots has opened the additional services shown below.

2. [email protected]
This service operates under the same policies and guidelines as the SCRoots
email services at Rootsweb. It is useful for people with an email address that
may not function properly at our Rootsweb servers. [email protected] is
restricted to plain text email only. Messages with HTML, RTF, attachments, or
other non-text formats are not acceptable in [email protected]. Messages in
[email protected] are archived by the Forum. The default "Reply-To" is back
to the forum, but users can always manually change the addressing of replies.

3. [email protected]
Some people want or need to be able to send attachments and HTML coded email
messages. This is not allowed at Rootseb. So, SCRoots has setup this special
email service to accommodate this need. SC-Genealogy is used by SCRoots members
for sending messages with HTML or attachments. SC-Genealogy is restricted to
discussions and information regarding South Carolina genealogy and related
history. Messages in SC-Genealogy may be archived by the Forum. The default
"Reply-To" is back to the forum, but users can always manually change the
addressing of replies. Messages with HTML, RTF, attachments, or other non-text
ARE ALLOWED in [email protected]. Subscribe here:

Some folks have problems with long messages. They want only short messages and
cringe when long transcribed texts arrive in their inbox. To try and provide
meet the special needs of these SCRooters we have created this "Lite" version of
our email services. SCRoots-Lite is for shorter text messages only (about 5k or
60 lines or less). Transcriptions and long messages (60+ lines) are not
acceptable in SCRoots-Lite. The topic of SCRoots-Lite is genealogy and related
history for South Carolina. SCROOTS-LITE IS RESTRICTED TO SHORT TEXT ONLY
EMAIL. Messages with HTML, RTF, attachments, or other non-text formats are not
acceptable in SCRoots-Lite. Messages in SCRoots-Lite are archived by the
Forum. The default "Reply-To" is back to the sender, but users can always
manually change the addressing of replies. Subscribe here:

5. [email protected]
Sometimes you just want to chat. But, chatting is not allowed in our genealogy
areas. To satisfy your chat urges without irritating our "serious" minded
genealogists, SCRoots has created SCRoots-Chat where SCRooters can do email
chatting till they drop. The SCRoots-Chat email service is not limited to the
topic of genealogy. Members may use this forum for polite, non-commercial,
public email chatting on any topic. Messages in SCRoots-Chat are not archived
by the Forum. The default "Reply-To" is back to SCRoots-Chat, but users can
always manually change the addressing of replies. Subscribe here:
