Westbrook Reasearchers: Hello again. This is Phyllis Westbrook Arnold,
who through my cousin, Donald Westbrook, is allowing me to share some of
my research with you via his computer. direct all inquires to Donald and
he will keep me advised.

You may have seen the posting in which I showed by census records of
1810 thru 1840 that Arthur Westbrook Sr. of Chester county, Sc. could
not be the son of James and Diane Westbrook of Southampton, Va. because
James of Southampton had died (1773), several years before the birth of
Arthur Westbrook Sr. (1781-1790) who is first located on the 1810 census
of Chester Co., SC. I also told you that I would tell you how I think
this error came about and suppy more information on Arthur, Sr.

As early as 1976, and before I started doing research in South Carolina,
I was contacted by a researher through a query. He suggested to me that
James and Diane may be the parents of Arthur, and he was kind enough to
send me a copy of Arthur Westbrook's will which was written 26 August
1822. (Estate file, apartment #96, package no. 1589) This was probably
written not long after the death of his first wife, Elizabeth. He names
his children--boys first--and girls second, as follows: David, Gray,
Arthur and Henry (our Ancestor); Catherine, Hannah, and Patience.

Four years later, 8 February 1826, a codicil is written to include,
among other things, Item #4: All the papers bellonging to me concerning
the estate of William Morgan, deceased and belonging to my brother Henry
estate....

The assumption by the above mentioned researher and later other
researhers picked up on the common names of Jacob, Arthur, and Henry.
There names found in the will of James of Southampton. And, In my
opinon, without in depth research of Arthur, decided that they were the
correct pieces of the puzzle.

I have been sent lineage sheets showing Arthur as the son of James of
Southampton, notating Arthur's will and listing the above seven
children. If Arthur had been actually researched they would have known ,
for example, that he married again (Mary Strange, the widow of Joseph
Strange. Maiden name Marshall), and had a family of six more children:
Sarah E. (who married William Houston), Mary W. (who married Dr. A. J.
Peay), Rebecca L. (who married first a Houston, and second Willaim
Reid), Helen A., James Alexander, And Charles C.

Arthur Westbrook, Sr. died Deccember 1848...twenty-six years after the
will was written. It was entered into court in January 1849. The
children of the second marriage were not covered by that will, so they
sued for partition of the land. There are numerous bills in the equity
court records which name all of his children with the exception of Gray
and Hannah, who were now deceased. Although Hannah is not mentioned by a
first name, three grandchilldren are named: Eliza, Henry, and Nancy
Heath. Jesse and children are in Carroll County, Mississippi by 1850.

I do believe that Arthur had a family connection of some sort to the
early Westbrooks of Chester Co. SC, but I have not been able to prove
the relationship. Some of them did come from Southampton.

These are the Westbrooks that Arthur had some connection with. Arthur
Westbrook married Elizabeth Morgan. Elizabeth's first name is found in
Deed Book "U", page 54. 29 august 1821. Arthur Westbrook was the
administrator of William Morgan's will (Estate Papers, Apartment 45,
Pkg. 722). David Westbrook married Patience Morgan, Zachariah Westbrook
married Catherine Morgan. These were all daughters of William Morgan.

We know that Arthur Westbrook, Sr. was born in VA. William Morgan is
said to be from Southampton. Several of William Morgan's children were
born in North Carolina. It is quite possible that Arthur Westbrook
lived for a while in North Carolina, and perhaps migrated with the
Morgans. This is purely speculation.

The only other time I have seen any other Arthur Westbrook prior to our
anscestor is from the following:

Donald and I would appreciate hearing from anyone who may have some
clues on this elusive family. Please cite documentation, if you have it.
