Subject: Re: Apology From: Bob Shi Date: October 13, 1999 Dear Sylvia, In your original post, you said that the actions of Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis amounted to treason. In your most recent post, you continue to refer to the "late unpleasantness" as the "Civil War". In point of fact, it was not a civil war in that there was no attempt to assume control of the national government. Rather, it was a War Between the States as some of the states sought to leave the union that they had joined some years earlier. Thinking otherwise is reflecting a current view of affairs back to the mid-nineteenth century and has buried within it the notion that the Federal Government came first rather than the states. This is poor history and suggests that all of those southerners who fought for their states were likewise guilty of treason. These things are not simply a matter of words. Is it somehow better to speak lies about the dead than to speak truth about the living?
