I find the transcription of a Placque found in the French Huguenot Church
of Charleston, SC:

                      ANTOINE de SAUSSURE
                    Seigneur de Dommartin,
                       et de Monteuil
                     near Amance, France
Having embraced the principles of the
         Reformation, abandoning his Dignitaries and
Estates in Lorraine, and fled with his family
From persecution into Switzerland in 1551
Where he was an influential advocate
                     Of the Protestant Faith.
He took a bold and active part in the
Cause of the Reformation at METZ, STRASBOURG
                       GENVA, AND NEUFCHATEL;
From the latter of which this Church Derives its Liturgical Services.
Between John Calvin and Himself there
Existed a close friendship, as evidenced by their
Reciprocal letters still preserved by the
Branch of the Family residing in Geneva.

I have a lot more on that Antoine. In the 13000+ people in my family
tree, the two most fascinating are Henri the emigre to Sc and Him.
Because they MOVED..

Antoine de Saussure lost a lot for his faith.

He was Lord of Monteuil, Dommartin, Torcy, Espie, Sauvoy, Fontenex,
St-Martin, Lanfrancourt and Remaulcourt in Lorraine (around Nancy). His
father, Mengin Schouel, was lord of SAULXURES (hence the "Saussure"
phonetical transcription).

He was consellor of State, Great Falconer of Lorraine and Barrois,
Capitaine-Prevot, Gruyer et Receveur de Bouconville, Livreur et
Controleur des salines de Dieuzes.

In spite of his protestant faith, he was protected by Duke Antoine de
Lorraine, Roi de Sicile et de Jerusalem, who was his friend and his
godfather.

When the Duke died, Chistine de Danemark (niece of Charles Quint and
regent of Lorraine) threw Antoine in jail in 1550.

He escaped to Metz, Strasbourg, Neuchatel, Geneva and then Lausanne.

The University Library of Geneva has a lot of letters between him and
Farel, Calvin, Theodore de Beze, Viret etc. Calvin celebrated the wedding
of his daughter. There is receipt for a loan of 1100 ecus to COLIGNY,
etc, etc..

Anybody round there wanna say he was not a genuine Huguenot? ;-)

JBS

PS Any descendant from COLIGNY round there? I would love those gold coins
back! 8-)
