A graduate of Winthrop, she was the first woman to receive a doctorate in history from the University of South Carolina. Her career as editor and author began in the early 1930s when she was supervisor of a state-wide project for the transcription of historical records. She served as editor of the South Carolina Historical Magazine from 1948 to 1958 and was a member of numerous historical organizations.
