Subject: Re: Amelia Township From: URQ5 Date: April 28, 1998 In a message dated 98-04-28 23:41:55 EDT, you write: << Can anyone tell where Amelia Township is or was. >> Greetings from South Carolina. In 1730, eight townships were established in SC-- all within 60 miles of the coast & all related to the state's river systems. 1. Williamsburg ( Black River, Kingstree area) 2. Purrysburg (Savannah River, Aiken/Augusta area) 3. Saxe- Gotha (Congaree River, Columbia/lower Richland Co. area) 4. Orangeburg (N. Edisto River, mid- state area) 5. Amelia (Congaree/Wateree Rivers junction, Sumter area) 6. Fredericksburg (Wateree River, above Amelia) 7. Queensboro (Pee Dee River, Cheraw area) 8. Kingston (Waccamaw River, Conway area) As the population spread inland from the coast, it became too difficult to go to Charleston for business transactions & there was a need for a more accessible court system. In 1739, eight circuit court districts were established. As time went on and people used the court district names to refer to areas, use of some of the old township names declined (such as Fredericksburg) while some areas are still referred to by the old names (such as the Williamsburg area--without the township of course). I doubt if many South Carolinians who aren't genealogists could tell you where Amelia Township was located. The circuit court districts were: 1. Cherokee 2. Ninety Six 3. Camden 4. Cheraw 5. Georgetown 6. Orangeburg 7. Charleston 8. Beaufort The historical marker at the Calhoun County courthouse, St. Matthews, SC reads: "First settled in 1704, this region by 1733 included Amelia and lower Saxe Gotha townships. In 1765, much of it was made part of the new St. Matthew's Parish and was so named until 1865. Efforts in 1890 and 1896 led to an act signed on Feb. 14, 1903, forming a new county from parts of Orangeburg and lexington, named for John C. Calhoun. Erected by the Calhoun County Historical Commission. " Hope there is something here that helps.
