Subject: RE: Altman From: Carolyn M. Getting Date: March 24, 1998 Dear Patti, I have Altman/Altmann. My Great Grandfather William J. Altmann was born on May 18, 1858 in DC, "where the President takes his seat." Those are his words. I have a ledger where he wrote all this down. He married Lena(Wilhelmina Magdelena) Gross in Austin Co., TX on Oct 12, 1879. He had come from DC in 1878 to Austin Co., TX. He was a tinnier(metal worker-made things out of "tin" or metal). He left in DC these brothers, "Henry, Charles, George and John. I know of one sister, Anna Altmann, who he went and brought to Austin Co., TX, and she married Heinrich "Henry" Gross, brother of "Lena" Altman. Early records, spell the name with two nn's. I have a picture of my GG Grandmother, William & Anna Altman's mother, taken in DC, but no name. I have found a record of a marriage in DC of a Charles Altman and Wilhelmina Gros, who I think may be his parents, as they married in 1854. On census records, my Great Grandfather lists his parent place of birth as Germany or Prussia, but I think, his parents probably came with their parents around 1800, as when William J. Altmann came to Austin Co., TX, the story is told, he could barely speak German, which is not the usual case for 2nd Generation German families, or at least in my experience. My mother, who was a third generation American, spoke only German when she entered the first Grade. My Grandmother was Addie Ernestine Caroline Altman and she married Gustaf John Schuenemann. The Gross family of Austin Co., TX, had come to Texas arriving at Galveston in 1848. My Grandfather Gustaf "Gus" Schuenemann was the son of Karl August Schuenemann, who arrived at Galveston in 1883 immigrating from the Province of Pommern, Prussia. I have not made much progress on the Almann's. There were a few Altmann's who had come earlier to Austin Co., TX, and I am almost sure they were kin. I do have some cards that were sent to my Great Grandfather, from a Julian Altman in Virginia, along with a picture. I know that some of the Altmann's were in PA in the Pennsylvania Dutch Country, because my mother and my Aunt visited some there in the 50s. That is all the info I have at this time. Please let me know about yours, perhaps we can connect. God bless. Carolyn, just an old Texas Gal.
