Col. William Barrett Travis was the leader of the Alamo defenders. The best
known of the people who defended the Alamo[which, by the way, wasn't a
failure or defeat---it bought time for Gen. Sam Houston to choose the place
to face Santa Anna and to rally his men] were probably Jim Bowie [of Bowie
knife fame] and Davey Crockett. The rest of the defenders' names are
familiar only to most Texans of my generation.
There was one man who left the Alamo, he was the messenger sent by Travis
before the Battle started. The only other survivors were Mrs Dickerson
(called the mother of Texas) and her infant child, along with her servant or
slave girl. They were allowed to leave unharmed....with instructions that
they should tell Houston what was in store for the people who defied Mexican
rule.
There were 189 (known) who defended the Alamo-to their death. Did they have
a choice of leaving? Not after early February, 1836.
Some researchers believe the final count of defenders may reach 257; Wyatt
Earp was NOT there! For a better history of the Battle of the Alamo, go to
the Handbook of Texas Online.
There you will find many Texas subjects covered.
