The publication of this book in 1942 marked a first in South Carolina literary
and publishing history: its author, Annie Greene Nelson, became the first black
woman in the state to write and publish a novel. After the Storm portrays the
lives of the black inhabitants of the Peedee section of South Carolina -- the
customs, experiences, and manners of Southern black people at home, and the
struggle for dignity in the midst of deprivation. Mrs. Nelson, who overcame a
childhood of poverty to earn college degrees in education and nursing, has been
honored many times for her accomplishments in the field of writing.
