Three hundred years of South Carolina medical history are covered in this unique
three-volume series by a native South Carolinian, medical librarian and writer,
and pediatrician. It has been called "a well documented and broadly conceived
history of medicine in a state which presents both unusual and typical aspects
of American medicine." Each of the three volumes contains a narrative account of
medical activities and developments in South Carolina, a biographical section,
an appendix of documentary material, and portraits and illustrations. Volume I
covers the history of South Carolina medicine from 1670 to 1825, Volume II from
1825 to 1900, and Volume III from 1900 to 1970.
