In 1940, the South Caroliniana Library of the University of South Carolina
became the first and only separate university library completely devoted to the
history and literature of its supporting state; its manuscript collection now
contains more than two million items. The guide to this collection represents a
three-year task for Allen H. Stokes, Jr., then manuscripts librarian and now
director, who combined, condensed, and revised the entries in the card catalogue
of the Library's Manuscripts Division. Material catalogued includes: genealogies
and family records, official correspondence, military records, church minutes
and records, school and college records, plantation accounts, business accounts,
legal account books, medical records, travel diaries and letters, estate
settlements, minutes of organizations, notes on local history and government,
and many other types of South Carolina material. The index covers 116 pages and
contains names of manuscript groups, persons and families, places in South
Carolina, and subject categories.
