Subject: A Few Reminder Messages to New or Forgetful List subscribers, & a possible suggestion for Jerry Sanford From: Barbara V. Smith Date: April 17, 2000 Dear Jerry et al., I think, from things I've read in the past on the Internet, that possibly your browser automatically sends something like a "business card" as an attachment &, if you look under "Preferences" or something like, that you can turn that kind of thing off - it's a fairly harmless attachment - sort of just a fancy signature, but it "mucks it up" a bit for some lists. I certainly can't guarantee this is the problem, since I'm surely no computer expert, but I've seen this kind of thing cause problems on other lists in the past. May I suggest to everyone, who might need advice or reminders on list-posting, that you SHOULD 1) capitalize all surnames, 2) delete previous extra detritus & unneeded parts of posts to which you're responding, 3) make your subject headings as specific as possible, 4) address the list as the humans we are, 5) send unuseful-to-the-list private communications to the people for whom they're specifically intended, 6) sign with your real name, 7) save your instructions so as not to be forced to try to UNSUBSCRIBE by posting to the list, which usually won't do any good, 8) answer to the full list when you have some important info, from which others besides the intended recipient might profit, 9) proofread & THINK before you send, and 10) just use patience & your delete key when you don't like something. This is one of the "sloppiest" lists I've seen in the 3 years I've been on the Internet, with regards to a lot of the above, and if everyone could follow a few rules such as these regarding basic list etiquette, it will make it a more pleasant & fruitful experience for all! (Sorry this is so long, but it's been quite an experience the last few days dealing with unnecessary or problematic posts from this list... Good luck & other best wishes to all, Barbara (V.
