(Berkeley) and St. Stephen's.

Volume 1, "Secretary's book," (1824-1840) contains the proceedings (minutes of
meetings) of the standing committee (1823-1827), the constitution for the
government of a police association (1839) signed by members, and amendments to
the articles of the police association (1840).

Volume 2, "Treasurer's book," (1823-1839) contains accounts of the Police
Association of Pineville with Thomas Gaillard (secretary and treasurer,
1823-1825) including the names of original subscribers of the Association, and
with William DuBose (treasurer) list amounts received from members and paid for
expenses. Accounts of the Police Association of St. John's & St. Stephen's
(1839) with Isaac Porcher (secretary and treasurer) contain amounts paid and
returned to members.

Loose papers include two handwritten copies of the constitution (1839) for the
government of a police association (St. John's Berkeley and St. Stephen's), a
letter (1843 May 8) to Isaac Porcher at Chappel Hill (S.C.) from P.P. Palmer at
Wood Pond (S.C.) sending "the balance due," a resolution (n.d.) to send
delegates to a general convention, and a torn page containing resolutions (n.d.)

Volumes, kept intermittently, whenever danger of runaway slaves seemed to call
for special vigilance.
