Anybody missed me? ;-)

I've been working on digitizing Mills Atlas maps. I've put the 1820 Abbeville
District map online on the SCRoots web site and will be working on more as time
and resources allow.

It is difficult work and really stretches the limits of my equipment and
software. Working on such large images using my 9 year old, 14", out-of-focus
monitor is about to make me blind. My 9 year old 300dpi scanner isn't large
enough to scan the entire map at once. So I'm having to scan them in sections
and do tedious edge matching and editing to make them whole again. Of course,
the edges never match perfectly on two different scans so it requires pixel
level "adjusting" of the images to get them to appear whole again. The scanner
and software aren't powerful enough to get some of the details, so I'm making
other corrections manually. And the image editing program crashes often because
it exceeds the limits of my computer.

If I get all the maps done, I estimate the total size of the digitized copies
will be at least 15-20 Mb or more which exceeds the current limits of the forum
web sites. So, it looks like I'll have to buy new equipment, software, and web
space to accomplish this project. A new large screen monitor is a must if I'm
going to get it done without going blind.

If you're interested, check out the Abbeville map on the SCRoots web site.
Check back from time to time. I'll put more Mills Atlas maps online when I get
them done. But don't expect them often. It took me weeks to do the Abbeville
map, and it still needs more work.
