Sandy Island plantation journals/almanacs, 1792-1798. 3 v. Request #: 34/178 Plantation owner of Huguenot descent, who for many years planted on Sandy Island (Prince George Winyah Parish), Georgetown County, South Carolina. Allard Belin's son, Colonel Allard Henry Belin (1803-1871), inherited Belin's estate. Allard Henry Belin's plantation was known as Sandy Knowle. Three almanacs containing interleaved pages with handwritten plantation journal entries kept by Allard Belin for his plantation on Sandy Island. Entries in volume 1 (1792) pertain to preparing the ground for planting rice, maintaining ditches and drains, hiring Mrs. Keith's (of Black River) [slave] Billey from Laurel Hill [Plantation], planting corn and potatoes, problems with an overseer, raising sheep with Mr. Weston at Laurel Hill, and amounts of rice produced. Volume also contains a list of the names of slaves and number of blankets they received. Volume 2 (1797) pertains to rice planting, runaway slaves, Mrs. Keith's Billey missing work, harvesting rice and the quantities harvested, paying Mrs. Susannah Keith for "her carpenter fellows work," and expenses on the crop for 1797. Volume 3 (1798) contains entries concerning rice planting, corn and potato planting, runaway slaves, the receipt of cypress planks from Plowden Weston, a payment to George Skinner for planks from last winter, getting cooper stuff, and Mrs. Taylor's bricklayers providing 17 days labor.
