John McHaffie in Gargerie, Kirkcowan parish, Wigtownshire, Scotland, banishment is covered in PC10.606 through 612. He was a fugitive from summer 1679 until Oct 1684 per PC9.381. "John McHaffie in Gargerie for being actuallie att the last rebellion at Bothuell, for which yow [sic] as yett stand in the fugitive roll unrelaxed." Given under the signet at Edinburgh, 16th September, 1684, and signed "Will. Paterson, Cler. Sti. Concilii." [On the margin] "Wigtown, 14th Wigtown, 1684, actor presente be Mr Robert Colt, advocat, his Majesties Solicitor, alteri presente personally, except such as are marked absent in the book. The Lords continues further processe against the defenders till the sextein day of this instant." -- "Wigtown, 16th October, 1684, partibus ut in actu, and now and heirafter thereanent as in the booke of sederunt." From p. 381, vol. 9 of Register of the Privy Council, 1684.

Many other familiar names of those who were banished or killed appear on pp. 380, 381, 382, some of which is included in following.

Prisoners brought from Drumfries to Edinbrugh extracted from p. 377 of the 1684 Privy Council Register, paragraph 312, and they were prob. moved over a period of months.

John McHaffie was "brought from Drumfries to Edinbrugh" per p. 577 [prob. vol. 9] of Register of the Privy Council, as was Andrew Wilson and others.

Canongate prison. John McHaffie and Andrew Wilson are named in PC10.144, 16 Feb 1685, in Report on prisoners in Canongate Tolbooth: John McHaffie, Andrew Wilson "Two old sensles seek poor creatures starving in prison, give all other satisfaction but will not take the oath of alledgeance. The Committee offer it as their opinion they be sett at liberty." Committee composed of Lievtennant Generall Drummond of Cromlix, Collonell Grahame of Claverhouse called and examined prisoners.

I don't know whether John McHaffie was released, but I am told that he did enter New Jersey, and it seems likely that it will be possible to trace him there, and perhaps in s.e. PA. It has been suggested that he was involved in the rebellion at Stranraer, Wigtownshire, mid-1685, and entered New Jersey later that year.

John McHaffie in Gargerie between Castle Loch and Loch Mochrum, 1684, is one of the main subjects of my research.
