2. JOHN S.² SCHWARTZ (STEFAN¹) was born Abt. 19 June 1851 in Chicago, Cook Co, IL, and died 24 November 1910 in Dunn County, WI. He orked as a wheelwright in Chicago before moving to Adams Co. WI. He married BARBARA STYER/STEUER (b. abt 2 Feb. 1854) on 01 November 1874 in Adams Co, WI, daughter of PETER STYER and MARY FLAMING. She was born 27 January 1855 in Eischen, District of Hobscheid, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and died 31 October 1937 in Weston, Dunn County, WI.

John and Barbara lived in Adams County, WI for a short time after their marriage, but followed Barbara's family to the town of Weston in Dunn County by January 1876. They were farming on 80 acres of land in Section 27, according to the plat book of 1888. They cleared the land, built their home and raised a family of 13 children. The farm increased in size to 120 acres and was taken over by the oldest son, William, after his marriage in 1901. At that time, John and Barbara moved to Menomonie to make their home. All their children married except Ellen, who died at the age of seventeen of an appendicitis operation." (Styer, Gahen...)

The old log house of the Schwartz family (left) was built about 1877 by John Schwartz. It was typical of the homes being built by settlers of the time, usually from timber found on his own land, consisting of one room which served as living room, dining room, and kitchen with one corner for sleeping. As his family grew, a large frame bedroom and frame kitchen were added. When their oldest child, William, was married to Helen Hartfield, the young couple lived in the log house. Their children, Herman and Herbert, twins, August, Clarence, and Lawrence, were all born in the bedroom of the old log house. John and Barbara had moved to 2nd Street in Menomonie where Katherine, their younget child, was born in 1904, three years after William and Helen were married.
