OBITUARY - BRIDGEMAN

Patrick Bridgeman died September 20th, 1918, at the home of his son Michael, near Menomonie, where he had been visiting for three weeks. For several years he had been in delicate health but his condition was considered no worse than usual four days before his death and even then, though a physician was called, it was thought that his trouble was only a passing illness.

Mr. Bridgeman was born in Limerick, Ireland, December 25th, 1839, coming to America when he was twelve years old. For seven years he made his home at Shellbourne, New York. In 1858 he came to Wisconsin, where he made his home the remainder of his life excepting two winters he spent in the south on account of poor health. This sojourn in the southern climate proved beneficial and in 1861 he returned to Wisconsin, where, in 1865 he bought the farm north of Spring Green, which was the family home until they removed to this village four years ago last April.

Mr. Bridgeman and Miss Mary Milikin were married April 23rd, 1872, at Madison, and to them were born six children, five of whom are living, as follows: James, Spring Green; John, Muscoda; Michael, Menomonie, and Misses Alice and Nora of Spring Green. One brother, John Bridgeman, of Lenox, Iowa, also survives. There are also six grandchildren. Mrs. Bridgeman died November 14th, 1913.

The decedent was a man whose judgment was particularly keen and he took an active interest in affairs. His advice was sought in perfect confidence and was wisely given to neighbors and friends. He dealt fairly and justly with all and enjoyed the esteem of old and young.

Funeral services were held in St. John's church in this village last Tuesday morning, Rev. J. B. Brudermanns officiating, and his body was laid at rest in the Catholic cemetery.

Those from a distance who came to attend the funeral were: John Bridgemann, Lenox, Iowa; John Curtin, Madison; Tim Curtin, Marshfield; Mrs. Margaret Cunneen, Mr. and Mrs. Martin Walsh, Blue Mounds; T. T. Norton, Miss Nellie Norton, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Pollard, Dennis Shannon, Dodgeville; Mrs. Mary Grace, Miss Minnie Grace, Waukesha; Mr. and Mrs. John Delaney, Mrs. Dolan, Avoca; Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Dunbar, Clyde, James McCue, Jay McCue and Mrs. James King, Black Earth.

Notes for Mary Miliken:

Mary Miliken - Baptized 22 June 1839 in County Claire, Parish of Kildysart. Sponsors: Sinon Melican and Catherine Connors. (From Parish Records, Clare Heritage Center, Corofin, Co. Clare, Ireland.) Probably born between 19th and 22nd of June. At this time the priest recorded the family's address as Rosshill. Rosshill is not a townland in its own right but is rather an area situated within the bigger townland of Coolteengowan. Coolteengowan is a townland (a townland being the smallest rural division of a Parish) of approximately 246 acres situated in the Parish of Kildysart.

Mary Bridgeman, born in County Clare, Ireland, had curly, dark brown hair and brown eyes, was medium in height and rather slim. She had a very loving nature, so everyone loved her in return. It is said, that in raising her children, she ruled with kindness so seldom needed to resort to discipline. Her love of the outdoors resulted in a fondness for flowers, trees, birds and animals. Mary has left a Bible that has her marriage date recorded by her husband, Patrick Bridgeman. They were married in St. Raphael's Church of Madison, Wis. - Miliken and Curtin Family History and Family Tree, p. 2.

BRIDGEMAN-PARKINSON

Michael Bridgeman and Miss Nora Parkinson were married Tuesday, January 18, 1910, at St. Patrick's church;, Loreto, Rev. Fr. Rupprechter officiating. The wedding was a quiet one, only the immediate relatives being present. After the ceremony at the church the party went to the home of the bride's mother where a bountiful wedding dinner was served.

The bride is the daughter of Mrs. Catharine Parkinson of Bear Creek, in which town she has always lived and where she has made hosts of friends by her kind and loving disposition.

The groom is well-known and might be counted a Spring Green boy, having always lived on his father's farm a few miles north of this village. He graduated from the Spring Green high school and since has managed the large Bridgeman farm. He is the youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. P. Bridgeman, pioneer residents of this locality, and is a young man with no bad habits to handicap him, possessing all the necessary qualifications for a useful life. He is a hard-working, modern farmer-businessman, and has the integrity and preservance which win. Mike's friends are numbered by his acquaintances and they all wish him and his wife the happiness of a long life together.

Four years later he went into the plumbing business for himself and served the people of Adams County until November 4, 1964.

He had an accident and could not work for two years, he then became the manager of the Liquor Store until January 1, 1982, when he retired to our farm south of Corning.

We have three children: Dianne Kinder; Bill of Corning, and Elizabeth Motsinger of Marion Iowa. Five grandchildren: Angie and Aaron Kinder; Shelly and Joel Bridgeman; and Christopher Motsinger.

John's grandfather, John Bridgeman, came over from Ireland when he was 4 years old in 1854, and the family settled in Wisconsin. He married Margaret Shannon and in 1884, they moved to Iowa and purchased a farm in Mercer Township. Ten children were born: Helen, James, Daniel, William, Mary, Alice, Elizabeth, John, Leo, and Mable. Of this family, Elizabeth age 94 is the only one left.

John's father, James (1884-1972), was married to Elizabeth Sullivan (1893-1929) in 1915, and lived on a farm southeast of Corning. Four children were born, Francis, John, Margaret, and Patrick. But Elizabeth never saw her children grow up, as she passed away when Pat was only one year old. Where upon the children moved to Creston to live with their aunts.

James remained a farmer for many years and they moved to Prescott where he became a plumber and a windmill man, last moving to Corning in 1958.

Francis, his oldest son, was killed during World War II while taking part in the African Campaign. Alice's father, Glen Shearburn (1897-1960), was adopted by William and Martha (Clark) Shearburn when he was 3 years old. Like his father he was a farmer and lived his entire life on a farm south of Corning. He married Etha Ogburn in 1924 and three children were born: Dorothy, Glenn Jr., and Alice. Their first born, Dorothy, passed away in 1957. Junior married Lydia Dueling in 1949 and now lives in Arkansas. Alice was born and raised on this farm where we live. Eight years in a one room schoolhouse then to High School. She has been a nurses Aid and a housewife.

John was educated in Creston and farmed with his father. February 1942 to December 1945 he was an Aircraft Mechanic and Flight Engineer in the Air Force during WW II. Serving the Pacific Theatre and Japan three days after D-Day.

The farm on Mercer Township will be a century farm in 1985, as also this farm has been in Alice's family since 1888, so it, too, will be a century farm in 1988. Submitted by John and Alice Bridgeman (in 1984).
