Aged Citizen Passed Today
Thomas Bragg Higdon, 83, Died At Home At Higdonville
Thomas Bragg Higdon, age 83, years and 8 months, died at his home at Higdonville this (Thursday) morning at 7 o'clock, following a serious illness of eight weeks. Death was due to heart ailments and complications.
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Sugarfork Baptist church. The Rev. W.B. Underwood, pastor of the Franklin Baptist church, and the Rev. J.A. Flanagan, pastor of the Franklin Presbyterian church, will be in charge of the services.
Mr. Higdon was a member of the Masonic Fraternity, a farmer, a dealer in real estate and mineral interests for years. He represented Macon county in the general assembly at Raleigh in 1909, on the republican ticket. For two terms he served as sheriff and tax collector for Macon county and was a republican leader.
He was also a great leader in organizing the Macon County Bank, of which he served as vice-president for a number of years. Later when the Macon County Bank consolidated with the Bank of Franklin in 1931, he was then appointed vice-president of that bank.
He was the son of the late Major William H. Higdon and Jane Buchanan Higdon, who moved to Higdonville from Green's Creek, in Jackson county when he was four years old, and he lived at Franklin and Higdonville since.
Mr Higdon was the father of 18 children and had been married three times. His first marriage was to Miss Mollie West, and to this union were born four children, Ed Higdon, of Iotla; Mrs. Charlie G. Mincey, of Ellijay; Mrs. Vinnie Wilson, of Glennville, and Mrs. Thad Brown, of Nelson, Ga., There were seven children born to the second wife, Miss Frances Rich, six of whom survive as follows; Major Higdon, of Clarksville, Ga., A.R. Higdon, of Franklin; John Higdon, of Los Angeles, Calif.; Charlie Higdon, of Franklin; Leslie Higdon, of Cullasaja, and Mrs. R.N. Smith, of Winter Haven, Fla. To the third marriage to Miss Lula Shepherd, there were born six children; Lefferts, of Franklin Route 4; Paul and Ted, of Higdonville; T.B. Jr. of Clarksville, Ga.; Grace and Sammy, Of Higdonville. Memoir.
Maj. William H. Higdon a well known and highly respected citizen, died at his home on Ellijay, Macon Co., N. C., May 5, 1903. He had reached the extreme age of 86 years, and up to the time of his last illness, was not greatly superannuated.
He connected himself with the Baptist chuch in early manhood, and was afterwards, ordained a Deacon, which position he held till his death. His liberality for chuch support, was a strong factor, and his ready means were often used for public enterprises.
He was not long ill, but from the first attach, seemed to be aware of approaching dissolution, and expressed a willingness to undergo it--an ordeal through which all must pass. With our best preparation how weak we are! David says, "verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity." (Ps, 39:5); but Bro. Higdon had a strong hold upon the Christian religion.
During the Civil War Mr. Higdon was Major of the Confederate Home Guard, in Macon County, and from that time, bore the title of his rank.
The boyhood of the deceased dates back to the pioneer dasy. His opportunities for acquiring an education were meager, indeed.
His parents _____ possessed of small accumulated an ample estate.
Maj. Higdon's aspiration sometimes led him into the political field, and those who opposed him, way he ever treated difference in a kindly spirit.
He was twice married. By his first wife eleven children were born to them, eight of whom still live. The second wife, whom he married late in life, survives him, without issue.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. J. A. Brendle, and closed with prayer by Bro. T. R. Gray. The freemasons then bore the remains from the Sugar Fork Baptist church to the adjoining cemetery; there the body was interred with appropriate Masonic honors.
We now bid adieu to our dear old friend and father, and may all, by the grace of God, meet where they shall have a right to the Tree of Life.
The relatives of the deceased return appreciative thanks to kind friends who rendered so much service in hours of need.

William L. Higdon Passes in Asheville Last Monday Morning
Funeral services for William Logan Higdon, 73, prominent citizen of the county, were conducted at the Sugarfork Baptist church on Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock.
Rev. C. F. Rogers, pastor of the Franklin Baptist church, and the Rev. J. L. Stokes, II, pastor of the Franklin Methodist church officiated. Interment was in the church cemetery.
Mr. Higdon died in an Asheville hospital Monday morning after suffering a stroke last Friday. He had been in ill health for the past three years.
He was born at Higdonville in 1867, the son of the late Joseph and Margaret Berry Higdon, and spent most of his life here in the county. His first wife, the former Miss Emma O. McDowell, died in 1922. Some time afterwards he married Miss Mary Siler who survives him.
Mr. Higdon spent the early part of his life as a farmer and as a teacher in the county public schools. Later he became deputy revenue collector for the western district, and at one time was a government timber appraiser. He moved to Asheville a short time ago to make his home with his son, Joe Higdon.
During his lifetime, he served several terms on the county board of education and the town board of aldermen. He was also a former director of the Bank of Franklin.
He was a member of the Sugarfork Baptist church in early life, later moving his membership to the Franklin Baptist church. He was a member of the Junaluskee Lodge No. 145 A. F. & A. M., who had charge of the services at the grave.

Mr. Higdon is survived by his widow, Mrs. Mary Siler Higdon, and the following children: Fred H. Higdon, Mrs. H. M. Straine and Miss Hazel Higdon, all of Sacramento Calif.; William L. Higdon, Jr., of Salinas, Calif.; George Higdon, who resides in California; Mrs. Philip S. Hoyt, Mrs. Albert L. Ramsey, Frank M. Higdon and Lyman C. Higdon, all of Franklin; and Joseph Higdon of Asheville. Other survivors are: His mother, Mrs. J. H. Higdon of Higdonville; four brothers, James L. Higdon, of Cullasaja, Sam Higdon of Sylva, T. B. Higdon, of Atlanta, and Mack Higdon, of Alberta, Can.; and three sisters, Mrs. John Fulton of Gneiss, Mrs Eva Keener of Cullasaja, and Mrs. Dennis Higdon of Webster. Parents: Joseph Huffman HIGDON and Margaret Matilda BERRY.
