What's New - 2000

December 24, 1999 -- I have added a number of letters, mostly written by Florence Johns, but have really fallen down on updating this page.

November 20, 1999 -- More letters.  I have marked them with.

November 13, 1999 -- Letters from: Carl Friedrich Gauss, Eugene Gauss - 1, 2, 3, 4, R. P, Farris.   Updated genealogy. Posted a few of my deeds.

November 7, 1999 -- Letters from Florence Johns, guest book.

November 6, 1999 -- Third quarter 1881 John Jay Johns Journal.  Letters from Mary Worthington Graham 1,2, Helen Worthington Gauss & Robert Gauss.  These letters were written on a trip to Europe made by Helen Worthington Gauss, wife of William T. Gauss, her daughter, Helen Worthington Gauss (Jr.) and her sister, Mary Worthington Graham.

October 10, 1999 -- Letters from the mysterious R. FAWCETT, Pamela H. COWAN, and Henrietta FAWCETT Gauss.

October 1, 1999 -- New Genealogy pages generated by Gene Stark's GED2HTML program.

September 29, 1999 -- Well, I am trying out a search engine for my site.

September 18, 1999 -- I have been moving, hence the long interval.  I have rearranged the site in preparation for eventually including GED2HTML pages for the genealogy of the persons shown here.  If you registered with Mind-it,, above, you may have to do it again.  In fact, I may have to re-register with them.  There are some new letters and a number of new pictures.

August 3, 1999 -- Page on Carl Friedrich Gauss.  Interesting letter from a McCluer -- I haven't yet figured out which one.  I thought it was Uncas, but the author mentions Uncas in the letter.

July 16, 1999 -- I am now using Front Page 2000.  Slightly new look inspired by a great seminar on presentation of information by Edward Tufte.

July 16, 1999 -- Fawcett pictures, details of Johns House photo, letters from Henrietta Fawcett Gauss & Eugene Gauss to their son, Charles Henry.

July 5, 1999 -- Letter from Florence Johns to Minna Gauss, with an extensive Winston lineage.  Hopefully I have not introduced many new errors into it.  It was a real bear to type.

July 3, 1999 -- Letters from the Collectors, from Ann D. Gauss & Florence Johns.

June 27, 1999 -- Started a new Section on History.  I am not doing extensive research on this myself, but instead am posting the work of the Collectors.  Of special interest is the list of persons joining the First Presbyterian Church of St. Charles, Missouri.

June 19, 1999 -- Am actually FTPing the pages with additional obituaries mentioned below.  Excerpts from A History of the Pioneer Families of Missouri.  A newspaper extra, February 4, 1863.

June 12, 1999 -- Letters from the Collectors:  Mary Ellen Leathers. This letter has a great deal of genealogical information on the Johns family.

June 6, 1999 -- Letters from the Collectors:  Anne Durfee Gauss, G. Waldo Dunnington, and an unknown cleric.

May 30, 1999 -- Essays on the Johns Family, by the husband of Deborah Berton Johns.  Contributed by Dave Willis.  Obituaries for Eugene Gauss, Virginia Fawcett & a Memorial Statement for John Jay Johns.

May 29, 1999 -- Moved some stuff around.  Created a new section, The Black Book, for Notes of the Collectors, since I think there are enough of them to warrant their own section.  Added several pages of Notes on the Fawcett family, including notes from a couple of interviews with Henrietta Fawcett Gauss, and a handwritten transcription of the Fawcett Family Bible.
May 20, 1999 -- Summary of the Lindsay, Glenday and Durfee families.

March 7, 1999 -- received the following, explaining why I have been madly working on Fawcett letters. --S

I can certainly use these letters and can work on them immediately.  There seems to be a misconception in Hays County and Dripping Springs, the community where Willis first came, that he was sort of a drifter sheep farmer who had no family.  In face, he is not given credit for the first "settled" family.  We need to know if one of his wives was with him, the description of life here, everything we can!  We now know that through F. S. Fawcett, he is connected to the Johnson family, the ancestors of Lyndon B. Johnson.  I’m assuming F. S. is Joseph’s son, and grandson of Willis.  But, I need proof.  The most wonderful thing about your letters is that there is a story unraveling, of a father (Joseph) who obviously loved his sons so much, giving them guidance on life.  Willis, Niles, B. K. all came to the Texas Hill Country.  I need letters that tell "what then?"  Especially from Willis.  Jerusha’s letter sounds most interesting.  I am theEnglish department chair at Dripping Springs High School and  work closely with this book and our local geanalogical association.
Please send me any transcriptions you have, or anything else you find.  I would greatly appreciate this.  .....  I will cc this to Bill in San Antonio.  I really need his help as well.  You both are miracle discoveries, and I can’t wait to dispel the old story of Willis Fawcett,
drifter.  Thanks.  Janie Botkin

March 6, 1999 -- Chevy Chase by Percy Johns, Fawcett Letters, letter from Willie Parrish to Mrs. Lemly.

Received the following e-mail:
Please let me know how the Fawcett letters unfold.  We are writing a county history (Hays County, TX) and Willis Fawcett was the first person to settle temporarily in this area.  I believe his brother Niles was also here.  Also I have reason to believe that Susan , his wife, died, and that he remarried.  If you have any letters that discuss his life in Texas between 1850 and 1860, I would love to know.  Is there any way to make   copies for faxing?  I would be extremely grateful.  We plan to go to press in a month and the Fawcett story has been quite a mystery.  Your revelation is exciting.   Thank you so much.  Janie Botkin
