Subject: from Huntsville, AL re: Mary Rice

To: [email protected]

Hi Susan,

Estelle Hall here. The internet is amazing. I forwarded the Mary Rice letters to a friend who forwarded them to John Rison of Huntsville. He wants to correspond with you. He is very happy about the information. His email is [email protected].

Here are his emails:

Mary Jones Rice is buried in Maple Hill Cemetery -- first lane to the left as you enter and about half-way down. She was the daughter of Lewellen Jones and his wife, Nancy, and they were from Buckingham County, Virginia and obviously in my family but I have no idea how. There were three Lewellen's here at one time. The University has the burial ground of one family where the small Chapel is as you enter from University. Mrs. Rice was very wealthy and lived in the "Spite House" on Lincoln. All of her children died and she left her estate to the son of Bishop Lay (Episcopal), who was Rector of the Church in l859 when the present building was built. he later became the Bishop of the Southwest which was Arkansas. Cheers. I am through 2 of the 4 letters you sent !
John Rison

What an unexpected pleasure these letters are. THEY ARE OF MY FAMILY. Major JONES listed in the last letter was my great-great grandfather. This adds a great deal of verification of materials that I have spent a life-time looking for. Mrs. Rice mentions her grandparents, John Jones and his wife, Elizabeth Walker. Their son, William Jones was killed at Guildford CourtHouse in 1780. He married Agness Walker and his sister, Kesiah Jones married Anthony Winston. They laso had a brother John, mentioned in one of the letters, who had 5 of his children to marry children of Anthony Winston. So, it all makes sense. Thank you, Thank you, Thank you. I may have missed a letter. The ones that I made copies of are: Nov. 8, l880; Nov. 24, l880; and Jan. 4, 1881. Who has the originals ? Should I write them if they are of this family and add more highlights ?
WHAT A WONDERFUL SURPRISE !
Looking back, I think the first letter did not get sent. It had a few lines from you but nothing more.
WONDERFUL!
John Rison
