[S42] Article about re-interment of Taggert remains

"30 Years Ago" column

"On Monday, June 3, the remains of Captain Charles Taggert were taken from the Big Spring Burying Ground in Ayr Township and re-interred in the Union Cemetery, under the supervision of John J. Kelso. Captain Taggert was born in Northern Ireland in 1753 and married Mary Darby in 1777. He came to America at an early age and joined in the War for Independence. He was taken prisoner of war and return to America where he immediately organized a company of soldiers, composed of men from Fulton County (then Bedford County) and Taggert was named captain. This company saw active service against the Indians as well as the British. Captain Taggert's military record also extends to the Whiskey Rebellion when he responded to a call for duty. Captain Taggert came to this country on the same ship with President Buchanan's father, who settled at Cove Gap. Captain Taggert settled in Ayr Township where he became one of the most influential citizens of the community. Captain Taggert's remains were transferred to the Union Cemetery to perpetuate his name and memory for future generations, as the Big Springs Burying Grounds will soon be obliterated by the ravages of time and lack of money for maintenance."
