[DI111] From "The Examiner", Frederick, Maryland, Friday, February 15, 1861: "Manslaughter - a fracas occurred between two negroes at Knoxville [Maryland; near Harper's Ferry], on the 5th instant, in which a white man, named Hanson Poole, interfered for the purpose of parting them. After doing so, one of the negroes, named Goings, became insolvent to Mr. Poole, who resented it; when Goings threw a heavy stone and struck him behind the ear, crushing his skull. Poole was taken up senseless and carried home, where he died on last Friday night of the wound. Goings is in jail and will be tried at the present term of the Court; in consequence of which we forbear to give the rumors in circulation, which are too conflicting as to the degree of the crime committed, to be relied on."
[215] Occupation: Laborer. In addition to wife and son, household includes Charlott Poole, 38, female.
[217] Listed as "H. Pool". Burkittsville Post Office. Occupation: Railroad Hand. $100 personal estate.
[110] Born in Maryland.
[113] Living with daughter Elizabeth and son-in-law John Laman. First name misspelled as "Susah".
