STANIEC -- STANICE

In June 2003 I received an e-mail from Roman Witek, who lives in Poland.  His grandfather Józef SZTORC came from the Village of  Leki Gorne / Łęki Górne in southeast Poland, the same village where my paternal grandparents were born.  My great grandmother was Agnieszka nee SZTORC, but I was unable to connect the two SZTORC families.  I did eventually find that we are 4th cousins through our PAPROCKI families.

Roman's grandfather, Józef SZTORC, was a son of Paweł SZTORC and Agnieszka STANIEC.  Two of Agnieszka's brothers, Joseph and Bartholomew, immigrated to the Platte / Nance / Merrick counties area of Nebraska, where many of my Polish ancestors settled when they first came to the United States.

Following is some of the information I have about these two STANIEC brothers.

Joseph STANIEC and Tekla nee CZARNIK

Before immigrating to the U.S. Joseph married Agnes SKORUPA, widow of Andreas BANDUR, daughter of Adalbertus SKORUPA and Magdalena nee BARNAS.

STAWARZ / STAWOSZ / STAVAS

Sophia STAWOSZ
Joseph STAVAS

While researching the Bartholomew BANDUR - Catharina RYBA family who settled in Platte County Nebraska, I found their daughter Monica / Minnie married a Joseph STAVAS.  Joseph and Minnie's 1930 census listing shows that Joseph immigrated in 1913.  I have not yet found Joseph in the 1920 census, but I did find what I believe might be the Ship Manifest for Joseph, his mother and sister.

Baltimore Passenger List -- see Manifest entry
SS Barcelona, sailing from Hamburg, 16 May 1914, (second page is not online) arrived at Baltimore June 1914
Line 9 Stawosz, Zofia, age 30, wife, citizen of Austria, Polish, last residence, Austria Machowa (maybe), nearest relative father and grandfather Jan Platzac (?) (I'm sure about the Pla...), Machowa (Nadowa ??)
The second page of this manifest that would tell where and who this passenger was going is not online
Line 10 Stawosz, Karolina, age 1 3/4, daughter
Line 11 Stawosz, Josef, age 10, son
Margin note: 2214 - Omaha-15-17784-Rialto (Ralto)-107/1616-5154 ??? - 3/4/41

At the time I found this entry I didn't have any concrete information to indicate this was Joseph's family.  I went to an online index for obituaries published in the Columbus (Nebraska) Telegram newspaper and did a search for the surname STAVAS.  These were the results:

Columbus Nebraska Historical Obituaries  http://www.onelibraryne.org/obituaries/columbussearchpage.asp

CAROLINE KRESHA 26 Nov 1911 Mar 1981 68601 (Columbus, Platte, NE) (none specified) 508-68-4058 Nebraska

The Obituary Index entry for Sophia shows that her maiden name was PLACZEK.  The ship manifest entry shows that her father's name was Jan PLATZAC, a phonetic representation of PLACZEK.  Sophia gave her age on the 1914 manifest as 30 years, making her approximate year of birth as 1884; the Social Security Index gives her year of birth as 1882.  Close enough, as most genealogists have often found.

The Obituary Index lists a Caroline STAVAS KRESHA.  Karolina, age 1 3/4, daughter of Sophia, was listed on the ship manifest, with a brother Joseph, age 10.  The Social Security Index gives Caroline KRESHA's date of birth as 25 Nov 1911.  Her age is about a year off between the manifest and the SSDI entry.  Again within reasonable limits.

Joe STAVAS in the Social Security Index was born 10 May 1904.  Josef, age 10, son of Sophia, was listed on the ship manifest, with a sister Karolina.  The age between the ship listing and the SSDI is right on.

SZALEWSKI

Martin B. SZALEWSKI

The following query was posted to the Rootsweb list NE-Polish:
Hi List, I am looking for some details about Martin J. SZALEWSKI, b. 1885 and d. 1956 in Omaha. His father was Mateusz SZALEWSKI (1849-1903) and his mother was Mary STAFINSKI. He first married Anastasia "Nastka" KALKOWSKI on 22 Feb 1911 in Ashton, Sherman County, Nebraska. Nastka died 9 Jun 1929, possibly related to childbirth, but not necessarily. She had been ill for "some time". I am trying to find out if there were any children born to Martin and Nastka, though from family sources no children survived... I am just wondering if there were any births. I am also reasonably sure that Martin remarried after Nastka's death. Does anyone know who his second wife was and if they had any children?

Teofila Fiedler, age 10, single

Teofila \ Theofila married Stanislaus SZTORC.  See SZTORC below.

The 1900 census shows that Albert and his wife Pelagia were married 6 years at the time of the census.  Based on the ages of the children enumerated with Adalbert it is apparent that Adalbert was previously married.

An online Omaha Area Marriages and Anniversaries Index by the Greater Omaha Genealogy Society http://omahamarriages.wordpress.com/ lists Albert and Pelegia's marriage in October 1894:

SZTORC, STORC

Stanislaus SZTORC \ STORC and Theophila nee FIDLER \ FIEDLER
Also:
Theophila's parents - Jacob FIEDLER and Rosalie nee WOLNIEWICZ
Theophila's sister and brother-in-law - Albert \ Adalbert SZCZEPANIAK and Pelagia FIDLER \ FIEDLER
Grzegorz KLOCH (named on Stanislaus SZTORC's ship list entry as a cousin)

My great grandmother was Agnieszka SZTORC GALUS.

In April 2010 I received an e-mail from Therese E. saying

I am a descendent of Stanley Peter Storc whose father was Stanislaus Storc and mother was Theophila (Wolniewicz) Fiedler. My father was born in Omaha, Nebraska. His mother was born in Poznan, Poland. His father was born in Galicia, Poland. I was told that his surname was originally Sztorc.

In another e-mail

One of my aunts said that our surname possibly had been Sztorc in Poland, she believed.   Theophila (my grandmother) was born in Poznan, Poland.  She came to America when she was 11 years old with her parents Rosalie (Wolniewicz) Fiedler and her father, Jacob
"James" Fiedler.  Rosalie was Polish, but Jacob was I think German or Austrian?  Stanley Storc Sr. (my grandfather) came to America from Poland when he was 16 or 17 years old.  He must have had relatives in Omaha, Nebraska.  Theophila and Stanley met in Omaha  Theophila had a brother (also named Stanley) who worked at the Cudahy Packing Company where Stanley Storc worked.  Her brother introduced them.

I began looking for information about Therese's family that might lead to a connection to my own SZTORC family.  I first located Stanislaus' World War I draft registration and then found Stanislaus and Theophila in the U.S. censuses
