On 22 April 2006 I received the following e-mail from Agata:

My name is Agata ... I’m from Poland (Leki Gorne) and I’m looking for some Matyja Family - my [great grandfather's] (Fillip Matyja) brother came to Omaha (John Matyja and I know he had 12 children)

23 April --  I also know Roman and Maria Matyja (sibling of John came with him but they stayed in Chicago and they never got married).

John and Catherine settled in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska.  More information about John and Catherine MATYA.

Genoa Man Dies After Car Crash
Charles Matya's Auto Hits Highway 22 Bridge Rail in Darkness

Charles Matya, 61, Genoa WPA worker, died at St. Mary's hospital at 7 a.m. today from injuries sustained when the card he was driving crashed headlong into a bridge rail on state highway 22, about seven miles northwest of Columbus about 10:30 p.m. Saturday.
Matya sustained a fracture of the skull when, presumedly, his head struck the car door as he was thrown from the automobile.  Rushed to the hospital by a passing automobile, Matya never regained consciousness and little hope was held for his recovery.
DeLose Irish, 30, also of Genoa, who was riding with Matya at the time of the accident, received only a cut over his right eye and did not require medical attention.
According to State Highway Patrolman T. K. Woodworth, who, with Patrolman A. O. Grueber, investigated the accident, trouble with the car lights apparently developed as Matya and Irish were returning to Genoa from Columbus, and it was believed that Matya had proceeded ahead without aid of illumination after having been unable to fix the wiring.  This point is not known exactly, however, as Irish said he was asleep in the rear seat and did not awaken until the crash came.  Marks on the road some distance east indicated that Matya had stopped to work on the machine.
The accident occurred on state highway 22 about 500 feet west of the junction of highway 22 and U. S. highway 81, where Matya apparently lost control of the automobile, crashing headlong into the bridge railing.  The automobile was almost completely demosished, Woodworth said.

Former Farmer

Charles Matya was born in Poland Jan. 29, 1876, coming to America with his parents at the age of 3 1/2 years, locating in the Cedar Rapids neighborhood, at which place he grew to manhood.  To the marriage union, which was solemnized Feb. 14, 1901 were born six children, Mrs. Henry Hartman of Greeley, and Albert of Blair, and four children who preceded Mr. Matya in death.
The family farmed near Cedar Rapids until 1931, when they moved to Genoa, where Mr. Matya eventually was employed on a WPA project.
Besides his widow and children, five brothers, John, Joseph, Thomas, Frank and Michael, all of Cedar Rapids; three sister, Mrs. John Flakus, Cedar Rapids, Mrs. Agnes Chielbinski, Omaha, and Mrs. Mary Cayer, of Edgmont, S. D., and five grandchildren survive.
Funeral services will be held at St. Rose's Catholic church in Genoa, Wednesday at 9:30 a.m., Father Leahy officiating.  Burial will be in Genoa.
