LESIAK

Brothers

John LESIAK and Mary nee GARBOC / GARBACZ
Michael LESIAK and Victoria nee KNOPIK
Thomas LESIAK and Agnes nee SHOTKOSKI

The Ss. Peter and Paul Church (Krakow, Nance County, Nebraska) Centennial book has biographies for Michael and Thomas LESIAK.  Both biographies name their brother John, but give no details about him.

Both biographies name Michael and Thomas' parents as Stanislaus LESIAK and Catherine SUKALA.  Michael's marriage record (from the Nance County extracts) shows his mother's maiden name as SUKOL.  There are a few family trees at Ancestry.com that give her name as SOKOL and her birthplace as Leki Gorne, Poland.  I have the LDS microfilmed Leki Gorne Parish records on permanent loan.  I did not find a marriage record for Stanislaus LESIAK and Catherine SOKOL in the Leki Gorne Parish.  I have not found anything, yet, that links this Catherine SUKALA / SUKOL with the one born in Leki Gorne.

The biography of Michael LESIAK and Victoria nee KNOPIK on pages 147-148 with additional information from other sources:

Michael Lesiak, son of Stanislaus and Catherine (Sukala) Lesiak, was born September 8, 1877 in Austria.  He had two brothers, John and Thomas.  Michael came to America with his mother at the age of eight.  They came to Nance County, as his brothers were farmers there.  Michael settled southeast of Fullerton along the Loup River.  He married Victoria Knopik January 24, 1899 at Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Krakow.  Victoria was born in Platte County, Nebraska in 1884 to Albert and Anna (Goiecka) Knopik.  Michael and Victoria had eight children.

John LESIAK and his wife Mary GARBACZ

Named in the biographies of Michael and Thomas, was a brother John, who also settled and farmed in Nance County, Nebraska.  There was no biography in the Ss. Peter and Paul centennial book for John.  I have pieced together a biography of him through various sources.  I am fairly certain this is the brother of Michael and Thomas LESIAK.

I found John and his wife Mary in the 1900 and 1910 U.S. censuses in Nance County, Nebraska.  The 1900 census had 3 stepchildren enumerated with John.  It did not give their birth surname.  Nance County marriage extracts for John and Mary's two youngest daughters gave Mary's maiden name as GARBOUT and GARBOT.

Another researcher shared with me a transcription of the birth records of the St. Stanislaus Church in Duncan, Platte County, Nebraska.  John and Mary's three children Mikel \ Michael, Caroline and Kattie were listed in the document.  Mary's last name on Michael's record was GARBACZ.  Twins Karolina and Katharina had their mother's maiden name as MATUZ, father's name Joannes LESIAK.  The mother's maiden name is a mystery, however the date of birth, 12 Sep 1893, matched the Sept 1893 dates on the 1900 census for the two girls.

Knowing that Mary was previously married, I checked the transcription for Adam, Stanislaus and Emma, whose mother's maiden name was Mary GARB????.  The 1900 census listed 6 children, and Mary noted that she had 7 children living at the time of the census.  I found birth records for Stanislaus SATKOWSKI, born 22 Apr 1884; and Eva SATKOWSKI, born 7 Dec 1885.  Their parents were Joseph SATKOWSKI and Mary GARBACZ.  The dates on these records match those on the 1900 census for Stanislaus and Emma.

The Ss. Peter and Paul centennial book has a biography of Adam and Helen (TARNICK) SHOTKOSKI.  Adam was a son of Joseph and Mary (Garboc) and was born 25 Feb 1883.  I found marriage records in the Nance County marriage transcription for 4 children of Joseph SHOTKOSKI and Mary GARBOCZ (with various spellings).  It appears that Joseph and Mary's oldest daughter, Agatha, married John LESIAK's brother, Thomas!

1900 and 1910 census records for John and Mary LESIAK.

LISS / LIS

Jacob LISS and Mary / Maryanna nee RYBA

According to the John F. LISS biography in the St. Stanislaus (Duncan, Platte County, Nebraska) Centennial book, Jacob LISS and his wife Mary nee RYBA immigrated to the United States in 1875.  The centennial book of the Ss. Peter and Paul Church at Krakow, Nance County, Nebraska, says that daughter Anna LISS was born at sea on 25 Jul 1876.  I have not located them on a ship passenger list.  The 1885 Nebraska State census shows that Anna was 10 years old and born in Austria (part of Poland was under Austrian rule at the time).  Anna's brother Thomas was 7 years old and born in Nebraska.  However, the 1900 census gives Thomas' birthdate as Nov 1875.

14 Nov 2014 - I received an e-mail from a researcher about finding more information about Jacob LISS and Mary RYBA.

According to the 1885 Nebraska State census, their first three children, Andrew, Victoria and Anna, were born in Austria.

The Mormon FamilySearch.org site has an ongoing effort to put digital records online and index their extensive microfilmed holdings.  Not all Polish parishes have been indexed, but many have.  Using the search criteria "Event: Birth, Place: poland, Father Name: jac* lis*, Mother Name: m* ry*",  I was rewarded with these 3 results:

Only the baptism records have been indexed.  Without ordering the microfilms for this Parish there is no way to know if Jacob and Marianna married in Przeczyca.  Unless the names of Jacob's and Mary's parents  and/or their actual birth dates can be determined from U.S. documents, it will be difficult to tell if they were baptized here also.  From my experience with other Polish parishes records after about 1835 or so started naming the grandparents of a child as well.  These records are late enough that they probably include that information on the record.

The 1900 U.S. census indicates Jacob was born Jul 1836.  Out of curiosity I searched the Przeczyca records for Jacob LIS born between 1830 and 1840.  There is an entry that may have possibilities.  A Jacobus LIS was baptized 13 Jul 1839.  His parents were Michael LIS and Marianna PUPIRNIK (sic) (maybe PAPIERNIK?); house 11.  The house number is the same as the three children born to Jacob and Mary.  It is a small link, but provides a clue for further research.  (https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X59N-8XT)

Thomas LISS and Anna nee CZAPLA

In November 2011 I received an e-mail from Jayne:
I'm researching a Monica Liss who married William O'Neil in New York 'around 1940. They had one daughter before divorcing. I'm wondering if the Liss family you're researching is a connection. Monica was believed to have been born in Nebraska.
I asked Jayne if she had Monica's parents' names or any other information that might help find her.  Jayne replied:
All I really know is that my father's uncle William O'Neil married Monica Liss in Rochester, NY 'around' 1940. She was supposed to have been born in Nebraska but her sister Helen and brother Bill also lived in NY - ... Monica and William O'Neil had one child, a daughter sometime in the early 1940's and then they divorced. I don't know where Monica relocated after the divorce, but she may have remarried, don't know to whom.

Having the names of Monica and two of her siblings, I searched the census records at Ancestry.com.  In the 1920 U.S. census for Platte County, Nebraska, I found a Tom and Anna LISS.  3 of the 8 children enumerated with them were named Helen, Minnie and Ladislaus.  After extracting the 1920 census, I looked for the family in other censuses.

In 1930 I found Thomas enumerated in Greeley County, Nebraska.  He noted that he was married, but his wife Anna was not enumerated with him and not all of his children were listed in the household, including Monica.  I found that Anna LISS was enumerated as an "inmate" at the State Hospital in Norfolk, Madison County, Nebraska.  15-year-old Monica was enumerated with a Johnson family as a servant.

As I searched for these census records, Ancestry provided links to other possible records for this LISS family.  Some of them lead me to believe there must be a Public Tree at Ancestry that had these records as references.  A search of the Pubic Trees for this LISS family brought up several researchers.  One of them answered Janyne's question about what happened to Monica aka Minnie LISS O'NEIL.

The CZAPLA / BRYGG tree, owner Kathleen3178, shows Monica LISS was born 25 Apr 1914 in Platte County, Nebraska.  She married William O'NEILL 27 Jul 1940 at Sacred Heart Catholic Cathedral, in Rochester, New York.  They had a daughter whose information is Private, so she is probably still living.  This daughter married Ross E. MILLER (born 12 Nov 1942; died 21 Mar 2009, Alfred Station, Allegany, New York).  Monica then married John "Jack" RYAN (1922-1991) on 6 Jul 1954 at Rochester, New York.  She died 24 Dec 2007 in Livonia, Livingston County, New York and is buried at Memorial Gardens in Brandon, Hillsborough County, Florida.
