HAMEL
Arnold, a friend of mine from church, was interested in finding more
about his paternal grandfather, Ralph HAMEL, who was killed
in action during World War II. Arnold knew his grandfather was
born in Manistique, Schoolcraft County, Michigan, but not much
more.
A
search at Ancestry.com revealed a Ralph H. HAMEL from
Michigan buried in Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium. I
also found Ralph's burial listed at
Find-A-Grave.
Ralph was a Private First Class in the 16th Infantry 1st
Division. He died on 15 January 1945 and was awarded the Purple
Heart Medal.
Starting with the U.S. censuses, I looked for additional information
about Arnold's ancestors. The pedigree chart below, gives a
snapshot of what I've found so far, based on censuses and other sources
available on the web. This chart shows Arnold's HAMEL ancestors
through his 3rd great grandparents.

HAMEL
I found Ralph enumerated in both the 1920 and 1930 U.S. censuses with
his widowed grandmother, Mary HAMEL, in Manistique, Schoolcraft County,
Michigan. Also enumerated were Ralph's widowed father, Harry, and
his siblings, Roger, Eugene and Margaret. In 1910 Ralph's father,
Harry, was single and living with his widowed
mother and a sister Agnes. Harry would have married some time
after 1910 and
was
widowed by 1920.

I continued tracking this HAMEL family back through the census
records. In 1900 Harry was enumerated with his parents and two
sisters. Harry's parents, Henry A. and Mary T, married about
1885. Since the 1890 census is not available, having been
destroyed, 1900 is the only census I would find Harry's parents
together. According to the 1900 census, Harry's father, Henry A.,
was born in New York in October 1861, therefore I looked for him in the
1880 and 1870 censuses. In 1880 a 26-year-old Henry HAMEL was one
of several boarders
enumerated with a widow, Adeline Fuller, and her 5 children in
Manistique. The 1870 census has 16-year-old Henry enumerated with
his parents Henry and Caroline and several siblings in Corning, Steuben
County, New York. Doing the
math, if Henry was 16 years old in 1870 and 26 years old in 1880, he
wasn't born in 1861, as the
1900 census indicated, but around 1854. This raises the
question as to whether I have the right Henry or not. I later
found a cemetery extract for Lakeview Cemetery in Manistique listing
six HAMELs, which gave Harry's birth year as 1854. Not definitive
proof, but adds to the possibility / probability this is the same
person. The 1860 census gives the family name as HAMMOND, but
based on the individuals named, it is apparent it is the HAMEL family.

Caroline, immigrated in 1850 and 1851 respectively. They had been
married for 49 years. I checked the 1850 census, but did not find
anyone whose information matched Henry's.

ASHFORD
Ralph HAMEL's mother was Adelaide Mary ASHFORD. Adelaide married
Harry HAMEL on 23 Jun 1910, shortly after the 1910 census was
taken. She died 13 Dec 1918, so Harry and Adelaide were never
listed in a U.S. census together. In 1910 and 1900 Adelaide was
enumerated with her parents, Edmund and Caroline ASHFORD, and siblings,
Frank E. and Edith R. (Another online source, a biographical
sketch of Edmund ASHFORD, names another son Harry.)

The 1910 census shows that Adelaide's parents immigrated in 1880, but I
was unable to find them enumerated in the 1880 U.S. census.
However, at FamilySearch.org, I did find an Edmund ASHFORD enumerated
in the 1881 Canada census, who appears to be Adelaide's father. I
also found Caroline ASHFORD, enumerated in the 1881 British census,
living with her parents. According to a couple of online
biographies of Edmund ASHFORD, he did live in Canada for a time before
settling in Manistique, Michigan.

Children
of Henry and Caroline HAMEL
Notes:
Henry and Caroline are my friend Arnold's 3rd
great grandparents.
According
to the 1900 U.S. census, Henry HAMEL
was born December 1819 in Germany and immigrated to the U.S. in
1850. Caroline was born November 1830 in Germany and immigrated
in 1851. They were married 49 years, so married about 1851.
1860
was the first U.S. census in which I found Henry and Caroline HAMEL
enumerated. They were living in Corning, Steuben County, New
York, with three children: Henry, age 6, born New York; George, age 5
and Wm (William) age 2, both born in Steuben County, New York.
This census had their surname as HAMMOND, but this appears to be the
HAMEL family.
In
1870 Henry and Caroline HAMEL were enumerated in Corning, Steuben
County, with six children: Henry, age 16; George, age 14;
William, age 12; Lana, age 9, Mary, age 5; and Julius, age 1.
Finding
Henry and Caroline in the 1880 census was a challenge. Finally,
with some creative searches, I found them indexed at Ancestry.com with
a last name of HAUNNELL. I have to admit that deciphering the
handwriting of the census taker wasn't easy (see photo below).
What made finding them even more difficult was that Caroline was
enumerated as Dorritt. In later censuses she used a middle
initial D.
In
1900 Henry and Carrie D. HAMEL were still residing in Corning, Steuben
County. Living with them was their daughter Mary WEBER, who
stated she was married 0 (zero) years and was the mother of one
child. Also listed was Dorothy M. WEBER, age 10 months, shown as
a niece. This is the last census in which I found Henry and
Caroline
enumerated.
A
Google search for the surname HAMEL in Steuben County took me to a
cemetery extract done by the Painted Hills Genealogy Society.
http://www.paintedhills.org/steuben.html
Henry and Carrie D. HAMEL were buried in
Hope
Cemetery, Steuben County, New York. The extract shows that
Henry was born in 1820 and died in 1903. Carrie D. was born in
1830 and died in 1905. Five other HAMELs are listed in the Hope
Cemetery extract: son Julius, son William and his wife Margaret,
William's grandson Darrell and his wife Gladys M.

I found Harry with several name variations and a variety of birth
dates. The 1900 U.S. census listed: Hamel, Harry, son, born Dec
1888,
age 11, single, born Michigan,
parents born New York, at school. His marriage record of 23 Jun

gave his name as Harry H. HAMEL, age 21. On his 1917 World War I
draft
registration card he gave his name and date of birth as Harry Roger
Hamel, age 29, December 24, 1889. The "9" in 1889 was not clear;
it could have been a "7". The
Lakeview Cemetery extract has Harry Roger HAMEL, born 24 Dec 1887.
Henry HAMEL was born 24 Dec 1888 in Manistique, Schoolcraft County,

Children
of Harry HAMEL and Adelaide ASHFORD
Roger HAMEL
In the 1920 and 1930 U.S. censuses Roger was living with his widowed
grandmother and widowed father. He was shown as 9 years old in
1920, which puts his birth year around 1911. The 1930 census
showed his age as 21, putting his year of birth around 1909. I
have not found any other documented information about Roger.
The "Descendants of Richard Card & Rebecca of
Rhode Island" family tree at RootsWeb's WorldConnect has Roger Harry
HAMEL, son of
Harry HAMEL and Adelaide ASHFORD, born 23 Jun 1910. This entry shows
that Roger was married to ______ ROSEBUSH, and died 14 Feb 1993. The
only source cited is a "Card Genealogy", by Melany Hamel, dated 13 Nov
2001.
Roger
HAMEL's World Connect page.
Ancestry.com has a Roger D. HAMEL listed in the Michigan Deaths
1971-1996, who was born 23 Jun 1910 and died 4 Feb 1993 in Niles,
Berrien County, Michigan. His residence was also Niles. There is
nothing that names this Roger HAMEL's parents, so I am not sure if this
is the son of Harry and Adelaide.
Eugene
HAMEL
Eugene was listed in the 1920 and 1930 censuses living with his widowed
grandmother and widowed father. He was 8 year old in 1920 and 18
years old in 1930 putting his birth year around 1912.
The "Descendants of Richard Card & Rebecca of

Harry HAMEL and Adelaide ASHFORD, born 25 Oct 1911 in Manistique,
Schoolcraft County, Michigan. This entry show that Horace Eugene was
married to _____ EVANSKI, and he died 16 Nov 1985 in Lansing, Ingham

found anything documenting this Horace Eugene's parents.
Marguerite
/ Margaret HAMEL
Marguerite / Margaret was also enumerated in the 1920 and 1930 U.S.
censuses with her grandmother and father. She was age 6 and 16
respectively, putting her year of birth around 1914. I showed my
friend Arnold my initial findings with all the information from the
censuses. He shared the document with his father, who remembered an
aunt Margaret who married a FINNEL and lived in Wisconsin.
The Social Security Death Index had these listings:
MARGARET A FINNEL, born 19 Oct 1913, died 10 Oct 1992, last residence
54220 (Manitowoc, Manitowoc, WI), last benefit (none specified), SSN

residence 54220 (Manitowoc, Manitowoc, WI), last benefit (none
specified), SSN 396-12-3858, issued Wisconsin
I located Sylvester in the 1920 U.S. census, living with his parents
and a sister Madonna:

Ralph
H. HAMEL
Ralph was my friend Arnold's grandfather. Based on his age in the
1920 and
1930 U.S. censuses, he was born around 1917. Ralph married Norma
GRONDINE in the
early 1940's and had three children. Norma was born about 1922, a
daughter of Edward GRONDINE and Sadie DISHNEAU. Ralph H. HAMEL
died
15 Jan 1945, a casualty of World War II. He was a Private First
Class in the 16th Infantry 1st
Division. He is buried in the
Henri-Chapelle American Cemetery in Belgium. He received the
Purple Heart Medal.
George HAMEL
In the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses George was enumerated with his
parents, Henry and Caroline HAMEL, in Corning, Steuben County, New
York. Based on his age in the censuses, he was born about
1856. In 1880 he was 24 years old and gave his occupation as
teamster.
William M. HAMEL and
Margaret / Maggie _________
William was also enumerated in the 1860, 1870 and 1880 censuses, with
his parents, Henry and Caroline HAMEL, in Corning, Steuben County, New
York. The 1860 census shows he was 2 years old at the time and
was born in Steuben County.
William remained in Corning. He and his wife Margaret / Maggie
were enumerated in the 1900 through 1920 censuses. I found two
children born to them: Louise M. and William Francis. In the 1930
census the older William was widowed; his son William and his family
were living with him.
The Painted Hills Genealogy Society cemetery extract for
Hope
Cemetery in Corning shows that William was born in 1859 and died in
1940. The Hope Cemetery Interment List shows he was buried 4 Jan
1940. William's wife Margaret was born in 1864 and died in
1925. She was buried 20 May 1925.
The 1900 census shows that William and Margaret's daughter Louise M.
was born May 1889. She was also enumerated with her parents
in the 1910 census. She was 21 years old at the time. I
have no other information about her.
William and Margaret's son William Francis was born 28 Jul 1899,
according to his World War I draft registration card. The younger
William, his wife Grace L. and their son Darrell were enumerated with
William Sr. in the 1930 census.
The
Steuben
County Historian Obituary Records lists William, his wife Grace and
their daughter-in-law, Gladys.

Lana HAMEL
Lana was first enumerated with her parents,
Henry and Caroline HAMEL, in the 1870 census for Corning in Steuben
County, New York. She was 9 years old at the time, so born around
1861. She was also listed with them in the 1880 census as Lainey,
age 19. This is all have about her for now.
Mary HAMEL
Mary was age 5 and 14 in the 1870 and 1880
censuses respectively for Corning, Steuben County, New York. The
1900 census listed her with her parents as Mary WEBER, born Aug 1865,
age 34. Also listed was a Dorothy M. WEBER, born July 1899, whose
relationship to the head of household was given as a niece. Here
is the full census extract for the household.

So far this is all I have about Mary HAMEL WEBER.
Julius / Julian HAMEL
Julius was age 1 and 10 respectively, in
the 1870 and 1880 censuses for Corning, Steuben County, New York.
In 1900 he was listed as Julian, with his wife Minnie, two dwellings
from his parents. Julian and Minnie had been married 3 years as
of this census.

The Painted Hills Genealogy Society cemetery extract for Hope Cemetery
in Corning, lists Julius C. HAMEL. He was born Nov 1869 and died
Sep 1920. The Hope Cemetery Interment List shows Julius was
buried 8 Sep 1920. I did not find Minnie in the 1930 census, and
she was not listed the cemetery extracts with the other HAMELs. I
searched for a Lee HAMEL in the 1930 census and found two listings for
a Lee HAMEL in Starr County, Texas.
1930 U.S. census, Texas, Starr County, Precinct
1, Fort Ringgold, U.S. Military Reservation, ED 4, sheet 1B, 10-11
April 1930
Barracks Street, family 70

April 1930
Third Street
Dwelling 193, family 214
Hamel, Lee, head, male, white, age 26, married, age 26 at first
marriage, born France, parents born France, immigrated 1904, alien,
laborer, odd jobs
Hamel, Josefina G., wife, female, Mex, age 21, married, age 21 at first
marriage, born Texas, parents born Texas
What is strange about the second listing, is that this Lee HAMEL
indicated he was
born in France, as were his parents. So, I wondered if this was a
different person. However, the
Steuben County
Historian Obituary Records list a Lee F. HAMEL, born 1903, died
1986, and Josephine G. HAMEL, born 1909, died 1963, both of Corning.
In Ancestry.com's OneWorldTree is a family sheet for a Lee Floyd HAMEL,
born 23 Mar 1930 in Elmira, Chemung County, New York, and died 28 Dec
1986 in Corning, Steuben County, New York. He married Josefina A.
GARZA 22 Mar 1930 in Rio Grande City, Texas. Josefina was born 7
Dec 1907 in Rio Grande City, Texas, and died 8 Sep 1963 in Corning,
Steuben County, New York. There are no sources cited for any of
this information.
The Texas Birth Index, 1903-1997 at Ancestry.com lists a daughter born
11 Sep 1934, Starr County, father Lee Hamel, mother Josefina
Garza. It is possible she is still living, so I am omitting her
name for now.
