John, Anna Maria (Schroder) & John Peter, Joseph

Except for Joannas Peter and Anna Maria, each woman has her hand on the shoulder of her husband.

My GG Grandfather, Johannas Peter BRAUN came to the United States around 1848 from Simmerath, Germany (Prussia). Johannas and his wife, Anna Marie SCHROEDER first settled in Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. They later moved to Dane County, Wisconsin. In October 1871 Johannas and his family came to the St. Mary's community southeast of Humphrey, Platte County, Nebraska where they spent the rest of their lives. Joannas died on 24 January 1893 near Humphrey, Platte County, Nebraska. Anna Marie died 15 February 1898 near Humphrey, Nebraska. They are both buried in the St. Mary of the Angels Cemetery, located about three miles southeast of Humphrey, Nebraska.

I was able to find Joannas and Anna Marie in each of the United States censuses from the time they immigrated. Following are the extracts of each from 1850 thru 1880.

She married Ignatz ZACH November 26, 1878 in St. Mary's, Platte County, Nebraska; they were the parents of 15 children: Rosa Maria, Maria Anna, Joseph, Katharina Emma, John Peter, Ignatz John, Josepha Balbina (Sister Lucella), Martin Michael, Francis, Julia Mary (my grandmother), Johanna Bertha, August Joseph, Henry Joseph, Leonard August, and Angela Maria. Anna died 28 July 1922 in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska. Ignatz died 25 January 1941 in St. Mary's, rural Platte County, Nebraska. Both Ignatz and Anna are buried in the St. Mary of the Angels Cemetery.

Rosa BRAUN
The story "The Home in the Cedars," told by Hubert BRAUN, and published in the Nebraska History magazine names Rosa as one of the children of Johannas and Anna. According to this story, Rosa joined the Sisters of Precious Blood convent in Missouri and had passed away by the time the article was written in August 1938. On 27 Oct 2002 I did a search on the web for "Sisters of Precious Blood" in Missouri. I found a site for a convent in O'Fallon, St. Charles County, Missouri. I wrote to the Sister who maintains the archives and received the following reply to my query:

"Rosa Braun was indeed a member of our community. In 1999 there was an inquiry about her by Stephen Braun. Sister birth year was 1856, her death 1879. We have no picture of her. She is buried on our cemetery."
Subsequent correspondence revealed that Rosa was born 21 Dec 1856 in New Coeln (Milwaukee County), Wisconsin. Rosa entered the convent on 18 Jan 1877; her religious name was Rosalia. According to the archive records, Rosa took her first vows on 12 Apr 1879 and died a few days later on 21 Apr 1879. The records indicate she received her habit on 28 Aug 1879, but that means she received her habit four months after her death. The Sister who keeps the archive records believes the dates were recorded in the wrong columns. She speculates that Rosa received her habit on 12 Apr 1879, took her first vows on 21 Apr 1879, and died four months later on 28 Aug 1879. Rosa's grave is in the convent cemetery in the 6th row, 3rd from north wall.

After posting the census listings for the BRAUN family, I noticed another anomaly in the information about Rosa. Here is the 1880 Nebraska Platte county census listing:

1880 Nebraska Census, Stearns Precinct, Platte County
Dwelling 75 / Family 75
Braun, J. P., w, m, 58, married Farmer, Prussia, parents same
Braun, Mrs. Anna, w, f, 56, wife, married, keeping house, Prussia, parents same
Braun, John, w, m, 20, son, single, at home, Wisconsin [this must be Hubert John]
Braun, Mary, w, f, 23, daughter, single, at home, Wisconsin [this must be Rosa?]
Based on the age given in the census, I believe the entry for Mary Braun is Rosa. She is listed after her brother John, who is younger than she is. The usual sequence is oldest to youngest child. If Rosa died in August 1879 that would be within the census year. I believe there is a Mortality Schedule for the 1880 census, that I will check at a future date.

So far no pictures of Rosa BRAUN have been found. Here is a photo of the Sisters of Precious Blood Cemetery and one of Rosa's (Sister Rosalia) grave marker. The Sister who maintains the convent archives had these pictures take for me. I am very grateful to Sister Virginia for this act of kindness.

The history of the Sisters of Precious Blood is on page http://www.cpps-ofallon.org/history.html.

Hubert John BRAUN and Mary nee DELSMANN, and Mary nee LOHAUS
Hubert John was born 10 Sep 1859 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Hubert married Mary DELSMANN on 30 Sep 1879 at St. Mary of the Angels Church, Platte County, Nebraska. Mary, a daughter of Joseph Bernard and Bernadine EIMERS DELSMANN, was born 6 Jan 1856 in Manitowoc County, Wisconsin; she died on 29 Dec 1892. Hubert and Mary had eight children: Hubert Peter, Mary Elizabeth, Albert John, Katherine Klara, Anna Josephine, Bernard Joseph, Louis John and Gertrude Mary (Sr. M. Romana). After his first wife's death, Hubert married Mary LOHAUS on 7 May 1894 in Humphrey, Platte County, Nebraska. Mary, a daughter of John Henry and Anna Maria ELPERS LOHAUS, was born 22 Jan 1867 in Ossian, Winneshiek County, Iowa. Hubert and Mary had eight children: Henry Anton, Joseph Ferdinand, Mary Anna, Elizabeth Bernadina, Ignatius Henry, Victoria Martha, John, Alphons Henry. Hubert died 5 May 1948 and Mary died 10 Aug 1912. Hubert and both his wives are buried in the St. Mary of the Angels Cemetery.

I do not have any information on my GG Grandmother Anna Marie SCHROEDER's line at this time.
