Bruce's maternal grandmother was Eva Estella GRAHAM, daughter of William Johnson
GRAHAM and Mattie Atmore HUMPHEYS. Eva was born 5 Sep 1890 at 2025 Moore St., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
On 22 March 1916 in Philadelphia she married Harry Baum SHOWALTER, only son of Jacob Funk
SHOWALTER and Martha
BROWNBACK.
Eva and Harry were the parents of one daughter, Eleanor Ruth SHOWALTER SANDLIER, Bruce's mother.
Eva died 20 December 1974 in Camden, New Jersey. Her obituary
reads: SHOWALTER -- On December 20, 1974. Eva E. (nee Graham),
beloved wife of Harry B.
Showalter of 6 N. 28th Street, Camden, age 84. Also survived by her
daughter Eleanor Sandlier of Franklinville, N.J., 4 grandchildren & 4

The person on the left is unknown. Viola
GRAHAM PEACOCK and her daughter Ruth are in the middle. On the
right is Mattie Atmore HUMPHREYS GRAHAM.
Viola is a daughter of William and Mattie GRAHAM.
I wonder if the unknown person was William J. GRAHAM. He and Viola have similar facial features.

Piecing together Bruce's GRAHAM and HUMPHREYS families has taken some
time. Our initial research began during our April 1998 trip to New
Jersey to visit Bruce's mother. Bruce and I visited the
Philadelphia National Archives and located William J. GRAHAM and wife
Mattie in the 1900, 1910 and 1920 U.S. censuses. The information
in these censuses helped us determine relationships between people whose
names we knew, but did not know how they all connected to one another.
According to the 1900 census William immigrated to the U.S. in 1872; the
1920 census shows he immigrated in 1882. His immigration
information was not filled in on the 1910 census.
After the 1930 census was released in 2002 and added to Ancestry.com, I
found William enumerated in Philadelphia, living at the Masonic
Home. His wife Mattie died in 1926, so she was not in this
census. William died in 1931.

Bruce died in Aug 2011; from time to time I search for new information
at Ancestry.com and FamilySearch.org to fill in gaps in our earlier
research. In 2012 Ancestry.com added the Pennsylvania, Church
and Town Records, 1708-1985 collection. I found several church
records relating to the GRAHAM and HUMPHREYS families. One was the
marriage record William and Mattie, which named the parents of the
bride and groom. William was a son of Robert GRAHAM and Elizabeth
(maiden name not given).
I requested copies of William's and his brother Henry's death
certificates from the Pennsylvania State Archives in the hope one of
them would have the full names of parents and birth location.
Neither certificate had that information.
In May 2014 I found a couple of records for William's brother, Henry,
that appear to be his Navy enlistment information. One of the
documents gave Henry's place of birth as Swords, Ireland. A Google
search shows that Swords is now part of northern Dublin. See
Henry GRAHAM for more details.
William died 14 Nov 1931 at the Masonic Home in Philadelphia.
Mattie died 25 Oct 1926 in Philadelphia. Both are buried in
Oakland Cemetery in Philadelphia. There are eight names on the
grave stone.

Bruce's
mother remembered her grandparents had a daughter who died, but we
found no other information about her. On the 1900 census Mattie
said she was the mother of 5 children and 4 children were living.
The 4 living children were enumerated.
Just recently (October 2014) I was looking through some of the
Pennsylvania Collections at the Mormon webpage FamilySearch.org and came
across the "Pennsylvania, Philadelphia City Births, 1860-1906"
collection. I found records for all 5 Graham children in this
collection.
Elizabeth was born 28 Apr 1886 at 2030 Cemetery Ave. in Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania. Her father's occupation was given as "Ice."
I also found a Physician's Certificate of a Return of Death in the City
of Philadelphia for Elizabeth. She died 8 Sep 1886. Her age
at death was 4 months and 12 days and cause of death was marasmus.
Elizabeth was buried on 10 Sep at Mount Auburn Cemetery.

Mattie Atmore GRAHAM's baptism record shows she was born 25 Jul 1888 in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; she was baptized on 3 Oct 1888 at St. John's
Episcopal Church in Philadelphia. Her birth record in the
FamilySearch.org "Pennsylvania, Philadelphia City Births, 1860-1906"
collection shows she was born 26 Jul 1888. The address on this
birth record was 215 W Cumberland. Her father's occupation was
"Ice."
Mattie married Joseph L. MURPHY in 1908 in Philadelphia; they had one daughter, Eleanor. Joseph,
Mattie and their daughter, Eleanor M., were enumerated in the 1910 U.S.
census.
In the 1920 census Mattie is divorced. She and daughter Eleanor
were enumerated with her parents William and Mattie. I also
located
Mattie and Eleanor in 1930 and 1940 censuses. In 1940 Mattie and
daughter Eleanor were living with Mattie's aunt and uncle William and
Margaret HUMPHREYS LEE.
Mattie died 13 Jun 1959 and was buried at Oakland Cemetery in Philadelphia, PA.
Mattie's daughter Eleanor M. MURPHY was born about 1909 in
Pennsylvania. She never married. She died at age 45 on 2 Nov
1954 and is buried at Oakland cemetery in Philadelphia.

Great Granduncle, Henry aka Harry GRAHAM
William GRAHAM had a brother Henry who also
immigrated to the United States. Henry was born 9 Feb 1866 in
Ireland. The 1920 U.S. census shows he was enumerated with his
brother William and family. It has been quite a while since we
talked with family members, so I don't remember where we got some of the
information about Henry. I am better at documenting sources
now....
After the 1930 census was released for public viewing, I found Henry was enumerated with his niece Viola and her family.

We knew Henry had been in the Navy. We scanned a couple of photos
of Henry; I believe Bruce's mother's first cousin Evelyn had the
photographs.
Bruce,
his mother Eleanor and I visited Philadelphia's Oakland Cemetery in
1998 and located the graves of several of the GRAHAM family. Henry
is buried there, but his headstone is so worn we were unable to read
most of it. Oakland Cemetery's card index showed Henry died 4 Mar
1935. One of the family had a newspaper clipping of Henry's
obituary.
Newspaper clipping: Henry Graham of 115 Champlost St., former
president of Fleet Reserve Veterans Association, died Monday in the
Naval Hospital. He was 69. Mr. Graham entered the U. S. Navy when he
was 18 as an apprentice boy. He was retired in 1922 as chief gunner's
mate. He was long active in veterans' activities. Surviving is a
niece, Mrs. Viola M. Peacock, with whom he lived.
Every once in a while I spend a little time trying to find additional
information about Bruce's GRAHAM and HUMPHREYS families. In early
2012 Ancestry.com added the Pennsylvania, Church
and Town Records, 1708-1985 collection. I found the marriage
record of Henry's brother William, which named William's parents as
Robert and Elizabeth GRAHAM. Elizabeth's maiden name was not
included on the record. Presumably, they are also Henry's parents,
but I have not found evidence to confirm that yet.
In May 2014 I requested copies of Henry's and William's death
certificates from the Pennsylvania State Archives with the hope that
their parents' names and place of birth might be included. Such
was not the case.
I also recently found (May 2014) a couple of records at Ancestry.com
that appear to be Henry's Navy enlistment information. One of the
documents was entitled "Enlistments of Boys in the United States Navy to
serve until they shall arrive at the age of twenty-one years."
My transcription from image:
Enlistments of Boys in the United States Navy to serve until they shall arrive at the age of twenty-one years.; page 31
Return of the U.S. R. S. St. Louis for the week ending January 20, 1883.
Names: Graham Henry
Enlisted: 18 Jany 1883; League Island [Pennsylvania]; rating 3 ??? Boy
Date of birth: 10 Febry 1866
Date of expiration of service: 9 Febry 1887
Where born and personal description: Swords, Ireland; age 16 9/12; eyes gray; hair d br.; complexion fair; height 5' 6"
Permanent marks or scars: none
The date of birth is one day different than what was on his death
certificate. From Henry's obituary we know he entered the Navy as
an apprentice at a young age. What was most exciting was the entry
of his place of birth: Swords, Ireland. A Google maps search
shows that Swords is part of northern Dublin.
My subscription to Ancestry.com only includes the United States
records. I searched the Mormon FamilySearch.org site for possible
records, but so far have not found anything definitive.
The search goes on.
