Samuel Preston

Samuel was born about 1651 in Ipswich, Massachusetts and died July 10, 1738 in Andover, Massachusetts. His age is established by a depositionin the case of "Thomas Preston plt. agst. John Newman deft. in the action of the case for illegal taking away of a heifer of the plt." "Deposition of Samuel Preston aged about 15 years. I Samuell Preston do heare testifie that about a year and a half since my brother Thomas Preston bought of my father Roger Preston one red heifer...(taken upon oath 19th 4th 1666 before Simon Bradstreet)."

On May 27, 1672 at Andover, Samuel married Susannah Gutterson. Susannah, daughter of William Gutterson and Elizabeth (____), was born ca 1654 and died December 29, 1710 at Andover. After her death, Samuel married secondly at Andover, Mary Rowlandson on September 24, 1713. Mary, the daughter of "Thomas and "Dorethie Robenson," was born August 24, 1666 at Salisbury, Massachusetts and died March 1, 1738/9 at Andover. She was first married to John Blodgett.

Samuel was admitted to the church in Andover in 1711. He was a carpenter, though owning considerable land there, and sometimes called yeoman. It is thought he lived near what is now known as "Preston's Plain" near Ballardvale in Andover. He received several grants of land from the town, the first being January 1, 1677 "on ye west side of his lott" and another March 1, 1680, "Granted liberty to Samuel Preston to change two acres he bought of Andrew Foster which was upon the plain by ye pine tree going to good: Ballards, and lay it out adjoining to his new farme."
