Jabez was born in Tiverton, Newport County, Rhode Island on September 2, 1731. He moved with his parents to New York and there in 1755 he married Elizabeth Preston. Elizabeth, daughter of David & Elizabeth (Martin) Preston, was born October 30, 1733 in Windham, Connecticut. She was baptized there on May 26, 1734 at the Second Church. In 1766 Jabez and Elizabeth left their home in Quaker Hill Beekman and removed to that part of Cambridge, Washington County, New York which was later set off as White Creek. There Jabez held several town offices and served on the Albany Committee for Correspondence. In October, 1775, Jabez enlisted as a Captain from Cambridge in the Patriot cause of the Revolutionary War. At least three sons and a son-in-law fought in Van Woert's Regiment. A son and son-in-law joined the Loyalists. Jabez also served in the French & Indian War from Dutchess County, New York. Jabez died in Cambridge in 1810. Elizabeth's death date is unknown.
