John Church

John was baptized in Watertown, MA on November 6, 1687. He gave his occupation as carpenter, joiner and millwright in different deeds. Around 1713 or 1714, he married Elizabeth Evans. Elizabeth, the daughter of Richard & Mary (____) Evans, was born in Rehoboth, Massachusetts on April 23, 1688. The records of Killingly do not give the date of her death which took place before or about 1736. After her death, John married again to Susanna Morris, daughter of Deacon Edward Morris and Elizabeth Bowen of Woodstock, Connecticut. This marriage took place on December 15, 1736.

Little is known of John Church's life except what can be gleaned from his will, some deeds and a few dates. He was made Freeman on April 30, 1723 at Newport, RI, though he was then living in Connecticut. He "entered into Covenant" or joined the Puritan church with his wife Elizabeth on July 25, 1725 at Killingly, Connecticut.

He is not known to have filled any office. There was a vigorous controversy in Killingly over the building of a church on an elevation that bore one of the incidents of Connecticut history. John opposed the project and wanted the church built elsewhere, which at least indicates good sense. Still, the church was built there.

John died some time after November 9, 1747 when he wrote his will. It is not known when his second wife, Susanna died.
