Scene of "The Long Run Massacre" (originally referred to as "Boone's Defeat") on 13 September 1781; also the battle a day later known as "Floyd's Defeat." On 14 September 1781, after a number of settlers had been massacred by Indians along a stream known as Long Run, a party of about 30 men commanded by Colonel John FLOYD came to bury the dead and avenge the massacre. They were, in turn, attacked by Indians, and over half of their party were captured or killed, including Gerardus RIKER.  Gerardus was one of the 5 to 8 settlers buried in the nearby sinkhole.  A monument (below left) has been erected by the State of Kentucky near the scene of the two battles, as well as a small plaque erected near the sinkhole by the Ryker-Riker Historical Society in 1988 to the memory of Gerardus.
