bullet  General Notes:

Oliver was six ft-4in. and heavier built than his father. ( paraphrased from a letter written by Iva Atherton, a half sister, about her impressions when he visited her family once.)

The following is a letter written by Oliver's wife, Blanche, to his father in Cody, Wyoming.
Britton, South Dakota, July 1, 1909
Mr. Oliver Whitney
Dear Father,
Well undoubtly you will think that we are not a going to answer your letter we got last winter sometime, but I wrote you in Feb. but maybe you never received it. It was to tell you how Ollie was he was in the hospital at the time with an awful bad case of pneumonia. He was there about six weeks & then came home but he has never got alright he is failing every day I think, he is so poor & weak he can hardly get around he only weighs 134 pounds. So you can see he is pretty poor & he has such a cough all of the time. I am awful afraid it has turned into the consumption, but I pray night & day that it isn't, for he is too good a boy to go so soon. I thot it my duty to write & tell you for if anything should happen I wouldn't be blamed for not letting you know. & thot that maybe you might want to come and see him. Come if you can for you are welcome at any time. For the baby & me we are well he is getting to be quite a boy, he is a year old the 23 of July he is getting teeth now and is pretty cross. It is such awful hot weather here now. Well I guess I will close for this time by asking you to please write soon & come if you can to see Ollie, for he is awful bad. well goodbye love to you from all of us. Please write soon to your Son & Daughter.
Ollie & Blanche Whitney
Britton, So Dak
Postmarks show that Registered letter was received July 5. As I understand the story, the father never responded. Because of this, Blanche never told her son that he had a grandfather living in Cody, Wyoming. He only learned of it from his Aunt Frances, after his grandfather had died.
