Descendants of George Soule
First Generation
1. George Soule , son of Unknown and Unknown, was born in 1590 in Poss. Eckington, England and died before 22 Jan 1679 in Duxbury, Massachusetts.
General Notes:Soule; English, Dweller at or near a muddy pond.
From the George Soule and his Descendants for 4 generations book : He married prob. Plymouth, Massachusetts, before 1626 prob. Mary Bucket/Becket who died in Duxbury, Massachusetts in Dec. 1676. She has not been identified. The 22/May/1627 Division of Cattle includes George Sowle, Mary Sowle and Zakariah Sowle. In 1651, Gov. Bradford wrote "But his man George Sowle is still living, and hath 8 children." George Soule was in Duxbury, Massachusetts as early as 27/Sep/1642 when he was on a Duxbury committee. The will of George Soule Sr. of Duxberry dated 11/Aug/1677, codicil dated 20/Sep/16777, inventory 22/Jan/1679, gave lands in Dartmouth to sons Nathaniel and Gorge; mentions lands in Middleberry formerly given to daughters Elizabeth and Patience; names daughters Susanna and Mary; eldest son John to have the remainder of his housing and lands. The codicil warned son John that if he disturbed daughter Patience, then Patience was to have the house and lands at Duxburrow. The account of John Soule mentions "since my mother died which was three yeer the last December."
George was orphaned when fire destroyed his home . He was brought up by his brother, Robert Soule of Selter Co. He came to America on the Mayflower and was a signer of the Mayflower Pact. He came as a teacher to Edward Winsows children. Mary Beckett came on the Anne and they were married in Plymouth. George Soule, Miles Standish and John Alden laid out the first town, Duxbury, and are buried there. He has been tentatively identified as son of John Soule of Eckington, Co. Worcester, and problably kinsman to Robert Soule, a wealthy London salter, who died in 1590 a native of Eckington. Robert Soule had a son Miles and a grandson of George, the Emigrant, also bore that name. All other George Soules found in England at that period have been satisfactorily eliminated. Fuller particulars of this identification will be found in the recently published Soule Genealogy for which a special extensive search covering a number of years was made by the compiler of this book. The Winslow family from which Edward was descended lived in the nearby parish of Kempsey, Co. Worcester, and it is probable that this early neighborhood association explains the apprenticeship of George Soule to the Governor. It is supposed that George Soule was in London when he joined Winslow on the voyage. Droitwich, the family home of the Winslows at that time, was a salt mining place connected in a business way with the Salters' Company of London in trade, and thus the Winslow-Soule association was extablished. The name of Mary Bucket, his wife, who came in the Anne, should be looked for in the parish of St. Botolph, Aldersgate, London. It is probably a variation of Beckett. The marriage is established through the sale by George Soule of that acre of land granted to her as a passenger, which he could do as her husband. Deputy To General Court, Duxbury, Mass.

General Notes:From "Portraits and Biographys of Famous Americans
Joshua soule was born 8/1/1781 and died 3/6/1867. Bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church. A lineal descendant of Georgge Soule who came over on the Mayflower. He was born in Bristol Maine, the fifth son of Joshua and Mary (Cushman) Soule. Although his parents were Presbyterians, Joshua in 1797 joined the Methodist Episcopal church and in 1799 at the age of seventeen, was admitted on trial to the New York Conference. In 1802 he was ordained Deacon, and the following year, Elder. He served as a pioneer iteinerant and presiding Elder in New England until 1816. In that year he was made book agent of the church and in 1818 became the first editor of the Methodist Magazine. Between 1816 and 1820 he was also active in the work of the American Bible society and in 1819 he became a charter member and treasurer of the Missionary and Bible Society of the Methodist Episcopal Church in America, the pioneer missionary body of that denomination. From 1820 to 1824 he held pastorates in the New York and Baltimore Conferences, making his home in Lebonan, Ohio. In 1842 he was fraternal messenger to the British and Irish Weseyan Conferences. At the age of 26, Soule wrote the constitution of the Methodist Episcopal church. The early methods of vesting the legislative powers of the church in a quadrennial assembly of the preachers had become so unsatisfactory, that at the general conference of 1808, a committee of which Soule was a member was appointed to prepare a more efficent plan. Without any assistance he prepared a draft, which with only a few minor changes was adopted the constitution of the church. His plan provided for a deleggated and representive General Conference, which was subject to six restrictive rules, to have legislative authority for the denomination. It also promoted the connectionalism of Methodism, anve to the Methodist polity democratic and stabilizing characteristics. Soule did his work so well as the Father of the Constitution, that there had been only slight inclination on the part of Episcopal Methodism to devise new means of ecesiastical law making, subsequently, he affected the polity of Methodism by his views concerning the sub-iposcopate. Until 1820 the presiding elders had been appointed by the bishops and not the preachers. Therefore at the General conference of 1820 it was decided the annual conference should elect the presiding elder. At this same conference Soule had been elected Bishop, but when the vote on the sub-episcopate was announced he refused to be consecrated. He insisted that an elective presiding eldership was unconstitutional since the fundemental law of the church instructed th bishops to oversee the business of the church. This function, Soule asserted, would be impossible if the presiding elders werte not directly responsible to the bishops. His arguments were so pertinent that the delegates resolved to suspend the enforcement of the resolution for four years. By the time of the next General Conference, 1824, the church had approved Soule's constitutional position, and he was again elected bishop of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was an excellant administrator and was recognized as an authority on polity. In 1844, when the General conference sought to dispose Bishop James O. Anderson, for his connections with slavery, Soule held that it violated the constitution which he himself had written. Therefore, when at the Louisville Convention in 1845, the Methodist Episcopal Church,South was organized, Soule was present and gave approval to its work. At the first General Conference of that body in 1846, he formally adhered to, and therefore a man born in Maine became the Senior Bishop of the southern branch of the Episcopal Methodist Church. He now moved th Nashville, Tenn. later establishing his home on a farm outside the city, Soule was an active Bishop until 1855. He died in Nashville and was buried in the old City cemetary, but in October of 1876 his remains were reinterred on the campus of Vandebilt University. He was married in Providence, R.I. Sept. 18,1803 to Sarah allen, by whom he had eleven children. He was 6 feet tall, musculer, had wide cheek bones, a high forehead, and a head so large that it was necessay to have extra size hats manufactored for him.
