ANCESTORS OF DAVID WINFIELD MACOMBER

The Macomber line

David Winfield Macomber, b. 5 July 1874, at Sibley, Iowa, d. 11 Dec. 1960; buried at North Platte, Nebraska. He married Essie May Robinson on 1 Sept. 1901. They had nine children. His parents:

Lorenzo Smith Macomber, b. 4 Nov. 1842 in Canton, Mass.; died 24 Dec. 1916 in North Platte, Neb., buried in Fort McPherson National Cemetery 26 Dec. 1916, in recognition of his service in the Civil War. He married Abbie Dennit Hemenway of Camden, Maine. She was born there to Henry Harrison Hemenway and Ann Russell; died 20 July 1939, and buried with her husband at Fort McPherson. His parents:

John Macomber, b. 1814, supposedly in Rehoboth, Mass., d. 1886 in Marlborough, Mass., and buried at Stoughton's Dry Pond Cemetery. His wife was Mary, daughter of Joseph and Mary Smith of Stoughton, Mass, b. 11 Feb. 1816, d. 5 Sept. 1863. Further information available about his wife's family on the Smiths of Canton and Stoughton, Massachusetts. As for John's ancestry, the following is from Everett Stackpole's Macomber genealogy (1927), that says John was "very likely" the son of John of Rehoboth, but he does not provide documentation. Any evidence showing a connection between the Stoughton and Rehoboth families would be welcome!

John Macomber, b. 12 Aug. 1786 at Rehoboth; d. 17 Dec. 1859 at Rehoboth. He married Sarah Smith of Rehoboth on 6 Dec. 1812. She died 3 March 1843, and he m(2) ----- Peck, who died 1 Apr 1862. John and Sarah are buried in the cemetery near Briggs Corner, Attleborough, a few miles west of their Rehoboth home. Their gravestones provided their dates of death. [Sarah's stone calls her "Sally."]

John Macomber, bapt. 10 Apr. 1777 in Berkley, Mass.; d. 10 May 1821. He married on 10 Apr. 1777 to Olive Shepardson of Attleborough, Mass. She died in 5 Apr. 1816. He was a Lieutenant in the American Revolution. They are buried in the Briggs Corner cemetery, where their gravestones provided their death dates.

Samuel, b. 1721, married 5 Apr. 1750 to Zipporah Crane, daughter of John and Hannah Crane of Berkley, MA; lived in Rehoboth, MA, and died 17 Mar. 1774. His widow died 14 Sept. 1814, age 86. They are buried in the Briggs Corner cemetery, where their gravestones provided their death dates. [Zipporah's stone calls her "Zeborah."]

Samuel, b. [date unk.] Taunton; m. ca. 1686 Sarah Peirce, daughter of Isaac and Alice (Chartley) Peirce.

John, b. 1651, Taunton; married 16 July 1678, at Taunton, to Anna Evans, daughter of William Evans and Ann Hailstone. He died 22 Jan. 1720/1.

John Macomber, immigrant to America, born 26 Oct. 1613, at Bridport, co. Dorset, England. The name of his first wife, mother of son John and daughter Mary, is not known; later he married Mary Babcock. He died between 1687 (when a land deed shows him alive) and 1690.

It is a common belief that John Macomber and his brothers Samuel and Thomas came from Scotland (Virkus' Compendium of American Genealogy gives one account tracing the family to Inverness); yet the hard data shows the family to be in southwest England. Their father was in all likelihood John Macomber who died at Bridport on 6 July 1650. His wife was Edith Locke, buried 10 May 1636 at Bridport.

The Hemenway Line

Abbie Dennit Hemenway was born 25 Aug. 1849 at Camden, Maine (in the section now known as Rockport), to Henry Harrison Hemenway and Ann S. Russell. She died 20 July 1939 at North Platte, Nebraska.

Benjamin Hemenway was born 24 Feb. 1793 at Royalston, Mass. Several Hemenway siblings migrated to Maine. Benjamin married at Camden on 6 Feb. 1814 to Abigail Wilson, perhaps daughter of Richard Wilson of Camden. This was after son Henry's birth. Benjamin died 16 Feb. 1873 at Camden.

Ralph Hemenway, immigrant, b. ca. 1603 in England, married 5 July 1634 to Elizabeth Hewes. He died 1 June 1678 at Roxbury, Mass.

(The earlier generations up to Thomas are to be found in Patricia S. Hemingway's The Hemingways : past & present and allied families, rev. ed. 1988, pub. by Gateway Press in Baltimore and Silver Spring, Maryland. Several of Thomas' children migrated to Maine where U.S. Census records show them through the early decades of the 19th century. I have some of this Maine data to share with other Hemenway descendants in that area.)
