R117. Stephen Rockwell (1797-1881): Son Joel Lawrence Rockwell, born 29 Aug. 1826 in New York City, settled as a young man in Ridgefield and here married Ann Eliza Lounsbury in 1850. Her brother, Phineas C. Lounsbury, served as Governor of Connecticut from 1887 to 1889, and another brother, George Lounsbury, held the same office from 1899 to 1901.

  7. George Lounsbury Rockwell, born 20 Jan. 1869 at New Haven; m. 5 June 1894, Grace Frances Greaves. They settled at Ridgefield, where he became a prominent citizen and author of The History of Ridgefield, published in 1920. One child as of 1896: Isabell Greaves Rockwell, b. 13 March 1895. A second daughter, Margaret Elizabeth, was born 24 July 1899, according to the Ridgefield vital records.

    Grace Rockwell died 5 Jan. 1902, according to the Ridgefield vital records. She was 26 years, 10 months, and 2 days old, and had been ill for two weeks, dying of typhoid and heart failure. On 16 April 1909, in New Haven, George married, second, Anna D. Ryan, the Rev. R. E. Shortell of Ridgefield's St. Mary's Catholic Church officiating. This venue reflects George's recent religious life. The records of Ridgefield's St. Stephens Episcopal Church show that he joined on 19 April 1897. He became a vestryman, but at the monthly meeting of the vestry on 4 Sept. 1908 he submitted his resignation,. He had, on 4 Sept., joined the Roman Catholic Church.

    There were at least four children born to George and Anna, as reflected in the 1920 census: Catherine G., 9; Anna J. G., 8; Rita Josephine, 6; George L. Jr, 3 yrs 2 mo., and Alice P., 1 yr, 7 mo.
