The Mississippi 1885 Atlas and Gazetteer
INTRODUCTION

elcome to the Mississippi 1885 Atlas and Gazetteer. The information on this site was obtained from an original 1885 edition of Cram's Unrivaled Family Atlas of the World. The lists of post offices, villages, towns, cities and counties were scanned from the index of the original atlas. Located in the lists are the names of the places, counties of location, sections of the county where the place is located and the populations of the places. Locations of county courthouses are denoted by a bold typeface and a dot preceeding the name represents an express post office. Place names italicized represent places with no post office. These lists can be invaluable to researchers in that most all populated places in the state are listed, as was found in 1885. Many of the places listed on this site are now extinct and are no longer on contemporary maps. Below the alphabetical links section is a map section. The Mississippi map was scanned from the atlas and then sectioned into eleven regional maps for easy presentation on this site.

Many old documents in Mississippi contain references to communities, villages and towns no longer in existence. Such source documents as old family letters, family Bibles and old deeds make references to such extinct places. This site can be used to locate such places. All 1885 place names are listed alphabetically. By finding the place on this site, the researcher can pinpoint the county of the place name and also get a description of which section of the county in which the place was located. After obtaining this information, the researcher can locate the appropriate map in the map section below and locate the place on the 1885 map.
