Tradition
of the Central Illinois Branch of the Girtman family.
April
Robbins
has a letter written by a descendant of George Girtman (born 1799 in SC)
who lived in Logan Co.,Illinois.This is a synopsis of that letter.
The story
has been handed down from generation to generation among the Central Illinois
Branch
of the family
that their earliest ancestors in America were two brothers named Paul and
Philip
Girtman.These
brothers came to America from Wurtenberg,Germany as guards over a group
of Hessian
prisoners.Paul,Philip and the other guards settled down in Pennsylvania
and let the
prisoners
go free. These people became known as the 'Pennsylvania Dutch'.It is said
one of the brothers married a girl from Holland by the name of Jane Hipp.Later, they
moved to
Charleston,SC
where George was born.
