For The past 20+ years I have been researching my husband and children's Bergen County Roots. As a life long resident of Bergen County, I had an advantage that many other researchers might envy. For the past ten years I have been working on a new Hopper Genealogy. I hope to publish the first 6 generations (which lists the seventh generation and their spouses) in the coming year. A second volume containing the seventh generation is nearing completion, and should be ready for publication in the near future. Here are a few sample pages from the book. [Converting to html has altered spacings and some characters.] To be placed on the pre-publication mailing list please e-mail me at [email protected] As always additions and corrections are always welcome. INTRODUCTION

Several accounts of the Hopper Family, and the immigrant ancestors Andries Willemszen Hoppe (Hoppen) and his wife, Geertie Hendricks, have been written by William Nelson, Hopper Striker Mott, Herbert Stewart Ackerman, and others. The most accurate genealogy of the Hopper Family to date, was written by George Olin Zabriskie and appeared in The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, published from 1969-1971, in a series of article entitled "Geertje Hendricks, Mother of the Hopper and Van Dien Families." [See below.] His five generation genealogy was not only very well done, it was most unique, as it is one of the few, if not the only genealogy, to trace the descendants of a female progenitor, from her two husbands, Andries Willemszen Hoppe (Hoppen), and Dirck Gerritsen Van Dien.
This volume will treat in greater detail the first sixth generation of Hopper descendants with many additions and corrections to the previous works. However, it will not trace Geertie's Van Dien descendants. Any corrections to this volume (and I know there will be some as in any such work), or additions can be sent to the compiler, at 81 Magnolia Ave., Montvale, NJ 07645. or [email protected]. They will be noted in the next volume.

While emphasis was placed on using primary sources in compiling this book, secondary sources such as other Genealogies were used as well. As much as it was possible all references in secondary sources were verified in primary sources. The reference books most frequently used are in the Bibliography. Those used for only one or two families are listed under only that family.

I have tried to make this book as "user friendly," as possible, so that even those unfamiliar with genealogical terms and local place names can use and understand the book. If I have erred in explaining the obvious forgive me, teachers have an irresistible urge to teach, no matter what they are doing. Care should be taken when using this work to read the Guidelines, and use the Abbreviations and Terms, Abbreviations Used for Churches, and Gazetteer which follow, in order to make the best use of the information provided. Also note at the end of the book the Appendices will provide more extensive records, the Notes/Bibliography which details the sources of the "References," and of course the index.
