Peter Troutman Family in Germany

Peter Troutman (1716) or Johann Peter Trautmann was born 3 Aug 1716 in Gross Gumpen, Hesse, Germany, the son of Adam Troutman (1690) and Anna Treusch. Peter had an older brother, Johannes (1715), who died 15 days after birth. Peter's mother, Ann (Treusch) Troutman, died on 1 Jun 1718, at the age of 22. So, Peter never knew his real mother. On 26 Oct 1718, Adam Troutman remarried to Anna Margaret Hartmann. Adam and Anna Margaret had 6 children, but only two, Melchior Troutman (1729) and Anna Elizabeth Troutman (1722), survived childhood.

Peter Troutman, like his father, was a tailor. On 10 Apr 1737, when Peter was 20 years old, his father Adam was killed by an accidental gunshot wound while hunting. Peter must have then become the man of the house, supporting his younger siblings and step-mother.

On 19 Jun 1742, Peter Troutman married Ann Elizabeth Gartner in Reichelsheim. The Lutheran church in Reichelsheim is very close to Gross Gumpen, and this is probably where they married. The date of marriage comes from a research done by Ella Geig, a German researcher. We do not yet have an exact birth date for Ann Elizabeh Gartner, but she was probably born about 1723, which would have made her 19 when she married, and 45 when her last child (Jacob Troutman) was born in 1768.

The work of Dr. Fritz Brown lists 5 children of Peter Troutman and wife Ann Elizabeth born in Germany:

In 1751, Peter Troutman and his family, as well as his brother, Melchior Troutman (1729), and his step-mother, Anna Margaret (Hartmann) Troutman, migrated to America. They sailed from Rotterdam in the Netherlands. Most likely, they traveled down the Rhine River to get to Rotterdam. Ther salied in the ship Neptune, an English ship commanded by John Mason. After a stop in Cowes, England, they sailed on to Philadelphia, landing on 24 Sep 1751. There were 300 passengers onboard, including 144 adult males.

The following are images of the signatures of Melchior (1729), Peter (1716), and Leonard Troutman (ancestor of the Kentucky Troutmans, and probably related to Peter and Melchior) from the 1751 ship list:
Melchior (1729)
Peter (1716)
Leonard

Peter (1716), Melchior (1729), and Leonard all swore oaths to the King of Great Britain at the courthouse in Philadelphia. Peter signed his own name, notice the very strange German "P", one of the many ways this letter was written in old German. The (X) in Melchior's name and the (XX) in Leonard's name may indicate that they did not sign their own names; the clerk wrote their names, and they just made an X or two.

An old family legend tells that a Troutman daughter died on the voyage to America and was buried at sea. However, the only female Troutman child known to be on the ship was Eve Troutman, and she definitely was alive as late as 1800. There are a few possibilities to explain this legend:

During the voyage, Melchior Troutman (1729) met Anna Heist. They must have married very soon after landing in Pennsylvania, since their first child, Adam Troutman (1752) was born only 13 months later.

Peter Troutman Family in Pennsylvania

Peter Troutman (1761) was 35 with a wife and family, and Melchior Troutman (1729) was 22 and newly-wed to Anna Heist soon after arrival in America, 24 Sep 1751. They arrived in Pennsylvania during a flurry of county formation. Besides the 1751 oaths, all records of Peter and Melchior's families in Pennsylvania are from Berks or Northampton Counties. Both these counties were formed in 1752. The part of Northampton County where the Troutmans lived became Lehigh County in 1812, long after Peter and Melchior migrated south to North Carolina. Often, you will see records stating that Peter and Melchior were in Lehigh County, but Lehigh County did not yet exist; they were in Northampton County.

The counties of Pennsylvania are divided into townships. We can state more exactly that Peter and Melchior were in Upper Milford and Upper Saucon Townships in Northampton County (present-day Lehigh County), and Hereford, District, and Rockland Townships in Berks County.

Peter Troutman attended church in Upper Milford and later in Rockland Townships. He owned land in Upper Milford, and was taxed in Upper Milford, Hereford, and District Townships. Melchior Troutman attended church in Upper Saucon Township. This entire area is fairly small, maybe 22 miles or so east to west. Note that not all the townships in the above maps existed when Peter and Melchior Troutman lived there, although the five townships mentioned above did exist.

The Troutmans were associated with four churches while in Pennsylvania:

1) St. Paul's Lutheran, Upper Saucon Township, modern-day Lehigh County, Pennsylvania

Also known as the Blue Church (so-called because its doors are painted blue), the Saucon Congregation. Saucon is pronounced like "sock on". Founded in 1739, first building (logs) erected in 1742, second building (stone) erected in 1763, third and present building erected in 1833-4. Melchior Troutman (1729) attended church here with his Heist inlaws. All of Melchior's known child were baptized at St. Paul's Lutheran. Baptismal records start in 1739.

2) First Evangelical Lutheran Congregation at Upper Milford Township, modern-day Lehigh County, Pennsylvania

also known as the Dillingersville Congregation, Upper Milford Congregation, "The congregation at the School House". Founded in 1734, ended in 1791. A log school-house and church erected in 1735. Peter Troutman (1716) had three daughters baptized here. When the much larger Zion Lutheran was built a few miles away in 1757, people began leaving the cramped older church. Baptismal records run from 1743-1767, then pick up again in 1789-1791. After 1791, church services were no longer held there. In "The History of the Allentown Conference of the Ministerium of Pennsylvania" by Preston A. Laury (published 1926, Kutztown Publishing Co, Kutztown, PA), the author notes the decline of the old church: "On Christmas of the same year [1767] there were only six guests: Adam Gebhard, George Huft, Theobald Mack, Adam Trautman, Nicholas Kolman, and Maria Barbara Vogelmannin." This was Adam Troutman (1743), son of Peter Troutman (1716). Note that Steve E. Troutman's book "The Trautman/Troutman Family History" shows a picture of a church called Zion Lutheran Church in Dillingersville. This church must have been built many years after the original Lutheran church at Dillingersville died out.

3) Zion Lutheran Church, Old Zionsville, Upper Milford Township, modern-day Lehigh County, Pennsylvania

Congregation began in 1757. Baptismal records also begin in 1757. This congregation started as an outgrowth of the older Dillingersville Congregation. Peter Hittle, who owned land adjacent to Peter Troutman (1716) donated an acre of land to build the church. The first building of logs was erected in 1758, followed by the second building of stone built in 1819, and the present church built in 1876. The town of Old Zionsville grew up around the church. Adam Troutman (1743), son of Peter Troutman (1716), had his daughter Barbara baptized at Zion Lutheran in 1770.

4) Christ Lutheran, Dryville, Rockland Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania

Also known as Mertz Church, Bieber Creek Church, Rockland Church. Founded 1735, first building of logs built in 1747, second building of stone in 1764, third building of stone in 1798, fourth building in 1859, and present church in 1915. Peter Troutman's family attended church here in the late 1760s. Several other families that later migrated to the Rowan/Cabarrus area of North Carolina also attended church here. These included the families of Beaver (Bieber), Lentz, Roseman, Hofner, Garver (Gaerber), etc. Samuel Garver, who later married Ann Elizabeth Troutman (1757), daughter of Peter Troutman (1716), was baptized here in 1767. On 22 May 1768, Adam Trautman (1743) and wife Mareretha (Margaret), sponsored the baptism of Adam Wisner, son of Casper and Mareretha Wisner. On 22 Sep 1768, there was a double baptism, for Adam Troutman (1768), son of Adam Troutman (1743) and wife Margaret, and Jacob Troutman (1768), son of Peter Troutman (1716) and wife Ann Elizabeth.
