Joseph Troutman (c1818) is believed to be the son of David Troutman (c1788) for two reasons. Firstly, David (c1788) was the only married Troutman male in Lincoln Co, NC at the time of Joseph's birth. Secondly, Joseph's (c1818) widow and children were living very near David Troutman (c1788) in the 1850 Census. Joseph's (c1818) birth year is approximated from the facts that he married in 1839, and his parents married in 1815. Joseph (c1818) married Ursula Abernathy in 1839. Since Joseph (c1818) cannot be found in the 1840 Census, it is believed that they may have lived with Joseph's (c1818) father, David Troutman (c1788):

F 20-29 unknown probably a daughter of David Troutman (c1788)
F 0-4 Rebecca Troutman (c1840) - age under 1 year

Joseph (c1818) had two known children, Rebecca (c1840) and Mary E. (c1841). Sometime after Mary (c1841) was conceived, and before Joseph's (c1818) widow, Ursula (Abernathy) Troutman remarried in 1845, Joseph (c1818) died. Since the part of Lincoln Co, NC where Joseph (c1818) lived became Catwaba Co, NC in 1842, it is quite likely that he died in Catawba County.

After his death, his widow, Ursula (Abernathy) Troutman, remarried on 21 Mar 1845 in Catawba Co, NC to Amen O. Bumgarner, who may have been related to Joseph (c1818), since his aunt, Mary Ann Troutman (c1790) had married Melchior Bumgarner in 1811. In the 1850 Census, the widow and children of Joseph (c1818) were enumerated in the household of Amen Bumgarner:

NC Catawba p.290, 291, 305

 372 372 Amen Bumgarner 33 M W Farmer - KY convict(?)
          Ursula 32 F W Catawba
          Rebecca 12 F W Catawba
          Mary 8 F W Catawba
          Minerva 1 F W Catawba

Note that the enumerator listed Rebecca (c1840) and Mary (c1841) with surname Bumgarner, but they were actually Troutmans. Catawba Co, NC marriage records indicate that Rebecca (c1840) married Lawson Caldwell in 1857, and Mary (c1841) married John Miller in 1869. The marriage record for Mary (c1841) lists her parents as Joseph and "Ursley" Troutman. No further research has been done on the daughters of Joseph Troutman (c1818).
