Notes for John P. ROSS
Nellie Huffman Henry's sheets
state that he was a soldier in the Civil War.
In the 1870 ceensus he is in Oakwood Township, Vermilion County,
Illinois
with his mother, Polly age 57 and his brothers, Henry 29 and Amos
age 16. No
one else is listed.
At the time of the settlement of his uncle, Amos Heavilon's estate
in 1893
John is listed as living in La Platta County, Colorado.
Some place I found a reference that he died in Grand Junction,
Colorada, this
is in Mesa County.
1900 Soundex for Colorado: John P. Ross, age 64, born in Indiana
in January,
1836; living in Ouray County, Portland Precinct #5 with wife Lucy,
born
November 1858 in Iowa; age 41. No listing in Soundex for 1880.
There is no
1910 Colorado Soundex. In the 1910 census John and Lucy are in
precinct #12,
Grand Junction, Mesa County, Colorado living on Pitkin Aveenue.
He is age
74, born in Indiana, states birth place of mother and father are
unknown.
This is his second marriage and her first marriage. They have
been married
14 years, no children born. Lucy born in Iowa, her father in Indiana
and
mother in Ohio. Both read and write, own home free and clear.
In the 1910 census John age 74 and Lucy age 51 are in Grand Junction,
noted
on page 181-B, Mesa County.
Newspaper obituary furnished me by Wyona K. Hennessey of the Mesa
County
Genealogical Society: November 24, 1911, "John P. Ross,one
of the oldest
pioneers in this section and a resident of Colorado for 36 years,
died last
night at his residence, 719 Pitkin Ave., after a long illness
with Bright's
Disease. Mr. Ross was 76 years old and is survived by his widow
and a
daughter, Mrs. Karl Kvist, of Ridgeway. Interment will be in Orchard
Mesa
Cemetery." Luretta F. Ross Kuist was his daughter by his
first marriate to Florence Overman.
