Notes for William ROSS

Harold Leckey in his book on the Tenmile Country of Greene County,
Pennsylvania states that William married a Martha__________ and moved to Knox
County, Ohio. Data gathered by Pearl Ross of the village of Butler, Ohio but
furnished to me by Mary Helen Emery of Dover, Delaware is the basis for much
of these records. Pearl Ross was the great great grand daughter of William.
She had copied from the family bible owned by Ronald Workman, a great great
great grandson of William on October 11, 1970. The coyright date of the
bible was 1812 and in the bible was a paper copied by Rachel Ross, daughter
of William, dated August 20, 1852. I subsequently obtained copies of Pearl
Ross's FGS for the William Ross family which confirms the above.
Knox County History states William moved from Greene County to Clay Township,
Knox County, Ohio in 1823. In 1836 they were living in Jackson Township
and that same year they moved to Jefferson Township, northeast of Horn
schoolhouse.
William was near his brother, Jacob, in Morgan Township, Greene County, PA in
the 1820 census. They acqured their father's land from their siblings
according to quit claim deeds. The census shows William with one male under
10; one male 10-16; and two males age 26-45. There were two females under10;
three age 10-16; and one age 26-45. One person was in agriculture and one in
Manufacture.
Jeanne Ross Hagen, 2570 Avery Court, Walled Lake, Minnisota 48390, (810)
669-1438 is a great great grand daughter of William and great grand daughter
of his son, Jacob Jay Ross. She has supplied numerous dates on the family.
Jeanne states that their family tradition as related by an aged aunt is that
five Ross brothers came to America from the Isle of Man.
In the 1784 tax roll of Morgan Township, Greene County, PA William is listed
as a "single freeman".
The date of William's death is slightly uncertain. Martha is burried in the
Harding-Hardinger cemetery as the wife of William. A William is burried there
also but is recored as for a 5 year old child. I do not find a cemetery
record for William Ross.
